Hi,
Any idea how we can achieve IR effect in pictures taken using either Dynax7D, or Dynax5D, or Alpha 100? Thank you Weely |

hi Weely,
IR can be achieved by attaching an IR filter on the front of a lens, such as the Hoya R72. But with the 7D and 5D, it seems that either the CCD itself or the low-pass filter which is in front of the CCD, is too reflective. Most likely the CCD. This issue produces glare-like effects on the resulting photo. The cause is still uncertain but I've seen some IR photos taken without much of this effect, which I suspect that the lens used could also be the culprit. No one has done any extensive tests/experiments to conlcude the real cause. You might want to borrow an IR filter from someone else to do a test yourself first before deciding to buy. |

Thanks Drudkh.
The thing is I have read and understood that in order for a digital camera to be able to capture images in IR, it has to be able to sense infrared (for example: pointing an activated remote control facing the camera and try taking a picture of it). If the outcome from the picture taken shows a red dot on the remote control, that means the camera was able to sense and capture infrared. But, I have tried on a D7D, D5D, and Alpha 100 and they all seemed to fail the test. So, does that mean to say all these cameras are not capable of doing IR photography? I searched and seems like almost none of our Minolta, KM and Sony dSLR kakis ever posted or spoken in the IR forum before. ![]() Last edited by wee_ly; 23rd September 2006 at 09:27 AM. |

I've tried on my D7D, it can capture IR, but takes a much longer exposure like 4secs. You also try different filters which gives you different wavelength of the IR spectrum.

Yup, joining outing is the best way to test. There'll be diff filters for you to try, unless all their cams are modified?
![]() Anyway, here's my first try in IR more than a year ago. ![]() |

Saw this thread and remind of of the IR filter I got.
Hehe...took it out and fit on my kit lens. Cannot aim since the viewfinder I see nothing and I took one and only photo. Alamak, damn noisy like Drudkh! But worth trying out again another day when I really free provided weather is good. Exif iso 400, awb, f8, 4s, dull cloudy sky. Awful!! haha![]()

Well, I pointed a remote control right before the camera and took a picture of it. When I view the picture taken, there was no red light coming out from the front of the remote control. If I am not mistaken, if there is no red dot, that means not able to sense infrared, is it? I am not too sure but that was what I thought all these while.

Hi..
I have posted IR photo taken using KM5D in one of the thread in KM forum. You can search it if you want. The following photo are taken with the Alpha. - Using Cokin P007 Filter ![]() - Using Hoya R72 Filter ![]() Exif data still intact. As you can see there is a big hot spot at the centre of the photo taken using the Cokin filter and a not so visible hot spot on the photo taken using Hoya R72. Both KM5D and Sony alpha are able to take IR photo, but you must be careful with the hotspot and better to use Hoya R72. For me, I prefer to take IR photo using my Sony V3, using night shot mode + Hoya R72 ![]() ![]() |

As d4nie has posted, A-100 can do IR photography, infact much better than the KM5D IMHO.
My experiment on IR photography on the A-100. ISO200 / f5 / 1.3 seconds exposure with Minolta 24-85 lens. ![]()

Just discussed with a friend.
The hotspot in the first photo might not be due to filter problem, but due to lens problem. I was using two different lenses for those photos. Tamron 11-18mm + cokin P007 KM 28-75 + Hoya R72. Will try the cokin on the KM 28-75, next time....
