Good morning to all.
I own a Maxxum 5000i with a AF 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5. The lens is part of the original lens set that came out with the maxxum 7000. Unfortunately, the AF/MF button on the 5000i body does'nt work no more so I also bought a used maxxum STSI (404si) with the lens that originaly came with it (Minolta AF zoom 28-80 1:3.5(22)-5.6 D macro). Now i have to sell one lens or the other. The 5000i lens is quite heavy, slow and "seems" of better quality. On the other hand, the STSI lens is smaller, quicker, and weights a lot less than the other one. Since I am NO expert, I would like to have your opinion on this. I took 2 rolls of film with the STSI and did not found anything that would make me sell this lens. The older one is SO heavy (but "seems" better in terms of quality) that i think of selling it. What sould I do: keep the older one or the new one? Thank you |

If you have the time, take some shots with both lens at various aperture and focal length and then compare for color, contrast, sharpness (center and edge) and CA. Compare the maximum aperture at various focal length as well, and AF speed.
From there decide which you want to sell off. If you in no hurry to sell or raise ca$h, just take your time, cause once sold it's gone for good. Some lens are hard to come by in the Minolta land. I will keep the 28-85, IMHO.

With film camera, if you develop 4R size only, it's harder to see the benefit of the better lens. Probably you have to develop until like 8R or shooting with digital then you can appreciate the better lens.

Try shooting slides with both lens. If I'm not wrong the 28-80, if it comes with a plastic mount, should vignets at the edges of the frame.
