Yup. How to hand hold a 4.4kg 400mm f/2.8 lens?

No other comments on the pics? 1st time using lenses > 200mm. Come come, don't be shy.

Pic 1:
Would suggest that you get hold of a flash extender and do some fill in. That way you can get a more balanced overall exposure.

Pic 2:
Irritating vegetation in the foreground. Right side in the background (just to the right of the crown of the heron) also messes up the photo. Its a pity cos I really liked the waterfall as the backdrop.

Pic 3:
Wat a weird looking bird spouting a really long black beak... haven't seen this species before... oh wait!! Thats Jed isn't it??

Thanks. A flash extender can reach THAT far?? It's the equivalent of > 800mm for the first shot, including the cropping! It's high up in the trees around the flamingo area.

Yeah, pity about the cluttered foreground. Jed possibly has a better shot of it (he alerted me to it actually, thanks jed!)

2nd pic oversharpened leh... all the hallelujah come out liao..
3rd is a rhino hornbill is it?

I think 2nd pic is ok but the grass is too high or too low. high gives a stalker feel, low for a documentary shot. here it tickles the bird.

I think the 1st shot not very effective becos of the harsh sun. the leaves attract more attention then the bird, which is blending into the sky due to its brightness and tone.

Ah, you noticed it. Yeah, 2nd pic is a bit oversharpened. Want the waterfall background, but cannot do anything to the foreground leaves. If I move to the right, I get more leaves, move to the left, no waterfall. Yeah, how come never thought of shooting lower?

Looks like bird photography is not for me. heh.

how come the heron so small at 400mm? hehe... but it's nice bokeh and everything...
although colour cast or colour bleach due to extreme sun... but that's postprocessing prob... I usually keep some yellow in strong sun, because it's an effect in a way... and keeps colours somewhat richer... macam warm filter haha... WB shd not be religious imho...

shot in shade is it the 2nd one? ok but background blend in too much with bird... 2nd bird is nice compo but the background unforgiving a bit ugly...

I know I complain a lot .. but I saw the ostriches with hair light from backlit sun haha... VERY nice... too bad didn't bring camera with me then (kena scolded by fren too)..

Actually they are all overcast. 2nd one is really in the shade. Doesn't help that Provia 400F has a slightly blue cast. But I found PS7 AutoColours gives me a "warming filter" effect, so I left it like that - nice and warm.

Those birds are bloody small. 400mm still need to crop.

2nd one yeah, poor bg. But I like the way the bg bird echo the fg bird.....

hehe yeah the red beak... when I was there yesterday it went galloping around the site like crazy... funny to watch but sad to later realise it was trying to take off with one wing...

yeah there's slight cyan tinge.. thought was over correction of sun.. maybe can yellowify the bg using hue/sat selective palette..
heh I always prefer lime green... lively
