Default Does adding RAM increases the speed of proccessing in my iMac?

I've been using my iMac to do homevideos, with iDVD and iMovie. I realised the iMac takes afew hours to burn a movie into DVD. I am using 512mb so far with a 160gb HD. Just wondering if I increase my RAM to say 2gb, will it be faster?

Now I am using iMac G5-the version just before the one with remote control, 2gHz with512mb RAM and 160Gb HD.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

from 512MB to 2GB i should think so

a bigger HDD and a faster burner will do wonders as well

I actually thought DVD-burning speed bottle neck was limited by the DVD-writer??
Unless you are multitasking on the same computer.
Don't think the improvement by upgrading RAM will be great in term of burning speed. But post processing speed should improve a lot.

    choice of media also important

as in different media burn at different max speed on different burners
so find one that is compatible with your media

eg. 16X imation will burn at 4X on my pioneer 8X burner, but will burn at full 16X on the Lacie external burner

Verbatim will burn at full 8X on my 8X burner

not much to worry about dvd burning speed, even at 1x you can finish burning a full dvd (4.3GB) in less than an hour excluding all the transcoding...etc.
the main killing part is the time needed to transcode the video format into the burning format for DVD-Video which iirc is mpg2 or 4... can't rmb well

i ever tried converting a AVI file into mpg2 or 4 + burning in 3hrs using my poor pentium M 1.7ghz laptop... and the burning time takes only about 20mins while the rest was to encode and transcode the format...

I think you guys are right. Its the transcoding thats taking a long time. I am doing now actually, with no other software running. Since 2pm until now, still transcoding....its only a 1 and 1/2 hr movie....wah lao...

So the transcoding will speed up if I add ram? By how much? if its abit then no point liao.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, adding RAM will not help RAW or Video processing. It is almost 100% dependent on your CPU speed. Also you will need to check if your processing software is multiple CPU aware, if it's not you'll be wasting money on dual core machines. That said, Windows and Mac OS runs sweet on 1GB of RAM.

    Take care

if u say only burning, then no... but if u have over congestion that cause your processes to be slow, then yes...

it is good to have big rams. i using 2gb for apple and 1.5gb for windows.

rendering video is another thing. it is mainly CPU intensive. adding ram does help when u multitask or have many pictures or video files opened at once.

IMO 2ghz imac is fast enough. perhaps just add more ram

OS X will work better with at least 1GB of ram
    512 is not enough
