looks ok to me. i think what you are looking for is CONTRAST... not that much of sharpness.
ExplorerZ, please help to elaborate differences between contrast and sharpness... and how to achieve the contrast. Thanks.

the camera is ok; the kit lens is so-so
you place on tripod and use self timer, on autofocus.
it is out of focus because the camera does not know what to focus on.

Contrast: - the relative difference between light and dark areas of an image.

IIRC, the quality of the light/ the amount of light entering the lens also affects contrast, which has an effect on sharpness.

How about changing ISO setting for cloudy day (e.g. ISO 200 or ISO 400)?

Do you know ironically that the term "Unsharp Mask" is a term taken from the dark room?

deTour, the easiest way is join some informal photo outing and borrow others lens to test and compare. Your photos looks abit under.

    no.
with any canon EF lens, or third party lens, with proper technique etc, you can achieve perfectly sharp pictures.

Unsharp masking is an image manipulation technique now familiar to many users of digital image processing software, but it seems to have been first used in Germany in the 1930s as a way of increasing the accutance, or apparent sharpness, of photographic images. The "unsharp" of the name derives from the fact that the technique uses a blurred, or "unsharp", positive to create a "mask" of the original image. The unsharped mask is then combined with the negative, creating the illusion that the resulting image is sharper than the original. - Wikipedia

    i see.
    thanks for the explaination.

never knew it was a method from the past.
that's why i was wondering how photographers in the past could get such sharp images without the need of USM in PS.

yes like what ianpaice have said. it is the different between bright and dark tone of that image. It does help to make the pic looks "sharper" but actually drawing out the dark outline (eg is ur image) looks darker and more contrast.
you might want to increase just the contrast of your original image to see if it works.

as for this, changing of ISO doesn't work if you are looking for sharpness/contrast.

Don't expect this lens to perform that well in this kinda light....especially if u ''hiam'' at 100% crop...

Just make do with sharpness or upgrade.

which digital cameras don't have low pass filter?
I believe the FOVEON sensors in the SIGMA cameras do no tneed the low pass filters.

Stunning contrast and sharpness from them.
