Hi all,
I am thinking of sending in my 20D for a complete service. Count >30k, dust, dust in viewer. Also my 28-135mm lens shows purple fringe. I was thinking of sending it all in and getting a full/complete service done.... but Since I like to take IR (I use a D70 for it but would prefer to use the 20D), should I get the sensor changed and get it IR modified? Is it possible to have it modified for IR but still use it for non IR By this, I am thinking ... remove the hot mirror but don't put an IR filter in it's place... For IR still use a Hoya R72, but for standard photography use an IR blocking filter similar in spec to the hot mirror. Hope you get what I am trying to say here. I am used to putting an IR filter on and off for a shoot so it does not bother me, but I would like my 20D to be more sensitive for it. Cheers ![]()

Hi Pablo,
Its possible to replace hot mirror with clear glass of the same thickness. So when shooting IR, you'll have to use a IR filter and for shooting normal photo, you'll need to get a hot mirror filter. I think B+W have one. Can't remember the model no. for the filter, sorry. ![]() |

B+W UV/IR Cut filter #486
I recommend this seller: http://cgi.ebay.de/B-W-UV-IR-Cut-486...QQcmdZViewItem I am using exactly this filter by myself with the Fuji Finepix S3 Pro UVIR together with all my Nikkor lens. Cheers, Wolfgang Last edited by Wolfgang Steiner; 11th September 2006 at 09:59 PM. |

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought you can shoot UV or IR with that camera as it is. |

Pablo,
I would mod the D70 for IR and get the 20D serviced for color pics. |

Ark19,
thats is absolut right. I believed that the name from the camera (S3 Pro UVIR) should be an distinct indication already, but because teerex is the second one who asked me this question, it looks like that its not so clear. This specialized Camera is able to record wavelengths from 350nm to 1000nm. That means it can also record UV-A light, if there is the right filter and lens mounted in front of the camera ![]() Regards Wolfgang |

Wolfgang,
In that case, shouldn't the S3 Pro UVIR come with an UV/IR cut filter as a standard accessory since the buyer is likely to use the camera for normal photography as well. ![]()

I would prefer it to be able to flip in and out as and when desired.

No such thing lah, Dennis. Even the 20Da is also just without hot mirror only. Maybe Deadpixel can try to modify one like dat? ![]() |

I may get the D70 modded, but I prefer the handle of the 20D for shooting (more at ease with it ).What I would like is to get the hot mirror removed (no filter put in its place) and use an external filter to make up for it. I could fit (the external "hot mirror") filter for normal shoot, also leave it off and fit IR filter for IR. I would imagine that the 20D without the hot mirror would make it faster for IR when fitting the Hoya IR filter Cheers ![]()

You'll still need a clear glass to protect your sensor. Also, the defraction of light thru the hot mirror is calculated in the focus calibration. So without any glass of the same thickness, your sensor is open to dust and possible scratch when cleaning and image may not be focussed. I think. This guy replaced the hot mirror in a 300D sensor with a clear glass from Edmund Optics. He actually calculated the difference between the thickness of the hot mirror and the replacement glass. And he used some plastic spacer to correct the difference so to get focussed image. but, the glass does not need to be the same thickness, because the refractive index of the glass used to replace the hot mirror is different. But this will be fixed in the focus callibration. |

So, its better if the replacement glass is of the same thickness, so focussing dun need to be calibrated. |
