UV filter is a must because it protect your lenses and does not do anything to exposure and your pictures.
Polarizer a must too to cut down on reflection.

    And both are relatively cheap.
Take all those 'Rules of Thumb' with a pinch of salt, hope you don't easily pick up all stuffs they write.
UV as 'protection without degrading the picture quality' is heavily discussed, I wouldn't dare to call it a must, rather a recommendation for having either a) a piece of mind or b) protection in certain conditions (water splash, sand, dust). In back light conditions and at night you'll get nice flare with nearly all filters. The cheaper the filter the 'nicer' the flare. Better take off all filters then. A polarizer can do more than just eliminate reflections. Ask some landscape photographers
"Relative cheap" is very relative. Go to Orient Photo (SLS, 6th floor) and ask for UV filters from Rodenstock (German company). It's just an UV ...

The front of the filter rotates until you get the desired effect ( polarisation )

If you have the time to play with them, go ahead. I recently had the chance to go on a 3 week tour so bought a polarizer + 2 different nd grads In actual fact, I wasn't able to spend time swapping filters. So while my filter's box looks really worn out, my filters were probably taken out of the box like 3-4 times lol.

IMO, the best shot is that when you are there at the moment, you don't need a filter for those kinda shots. Filters may enhance it, but I'm just not that dedicated a hobbyist nowadays to use filters

UVs for me on all my lenses!

Protector is plain glass without blocking UV. MC stands for Multi Coating.

I've got a polarizing filter on my Sigma lens all the time.

What other effect does it do other than removing some reflection and darkening the sky?

Hi, Filters are made from two manufacturers - Japan or Made in Japan. Former could be made by OEM.
