Default Off-camera Speedlight question

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 300D and a 580EX speedlight, and what I'm looking at is the remote speedlight triggers.

What I want to do is position the 580EX say off to the right by a few meters, and use that as the only flash source. Is this possible without needing a speedlight connected to the camera shoe? The 580EX manual doesn't say it cannot be done, but it doesn't say it can, either.

What are the solutions for this. I assume I need a trigger like the ST-E2 or Pocket Wizard.

I don't mind losing TTL metering as experimentation is half the fun, I just don't want to have to shell out for another flash gun.

Also, are there cheaper options? The remote triggers I mentioned are very expensive!

It depends how far you want to go. For short distances, you can consider the Off-Shoe Cord. If you wanna go further withour the hassle of wires, then the ST-E2. If you're planning to go outdoors or places where Line-of-Sight is not possible, then go for Pocket Wizards...

Cheers. I have an off-shoe cord, but I'm talking about placing the speedlight meters away. Even 10m.

Hmm. Those remote triggers are damn expensive. The PocketWizards do look very good though

there are cheap alternative to pocket wizard... also uses RF instead of IR and are reported to work fine with 580EX, unfortunately doesn't work with 430EX which is what I'm using.

Here's a link from a past MO http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=184320

no worries... hope you find it somewhere... if you do, please let me know... might want to try again with my 430EX... try experimenting by maybe blocking (sticky-taping) some metallic contacts.

You have a few options available.

1. For ETTL to be still enabled, you will need a ST-E2, which is kinda expensive at $250. Mite as well buy a 420EX as slave and 580EX as master.

2. Get a cheap Jinbei radio trigger + slave adapter for your 580EX. Should be able to get both for about $100. Cheapest option, though you lose ETTL. I'm not too sure about the triggering reliability as I have not tried this combi, but the radio trigger works perfectly fine on my studio strobes though.

3. PocketWizard! Most reliable and also the most expensive, but still w/o ETTL

Can the radio trigger work with 430EX?

The cheapest option I had, was to get the offshoe cord, and then had a 15 ft extension cable made that allows me to place the flash anywhere within the radius of 15ft.

I've gotten the cable made for about SGD$20, at a shop in Funan. The shop is called Calble n Such, I think.

I works great for my 580EX, and ETTL was preserverd.

Cheers,

Kenny

Other than the MO which was quite some time ago, anyone know where else we can get hold of that radio trigger + slave?

If using a cheap trigger and slave adapter, why not use a cheaper flash too? Since you not utilising ETTL. That is what I am doing since my adapter doesn't work on my 580EX, I use it on a Sigma 500.
