if u want better performance, get a Western Digital Raptor which spins at 10k rpm. Use it mainly for ur OS and software whcih ur Photoshop will be in and then store them in normal 7200 rpm hdds.

also, do get a decent brand of power supply. Avoid iCute at all costs and dun get cheapo ones which comes with casing. The 7900GS would consume quite a lot of power, so u'll probably need at least a 500W PSU.

the stability of the system not only depends on hardware, more important it is the software.

I never heard of Windows OS that will not hang
    We are HDD of PC & FT are MB add to storage;
so PC never hangs with enormous storage capacity - LKY

Not true.. The harddisk is too slow. The Graphics card is too lowend. Sound card is kinda lowend too.

Video Editing can... Sound is from source (MiniDV, DVD or HDD), thus only convert to mp3 variants (CPU Strength Only), video is also from source (MiniDV, DVD or HDD) and just convert to Mpeg (CPU Strength only), no need anti-aliasing or pixel shading...harddisk is aceptable... but preferbly with RAID 0

    but not 3D animation...

need for Raid 0 meh?? its just only stripping the data into 2 hdds.

just get a WD Raptor 74gb for OS and softwares and it should suffice. unless SCSI with 15k rpm SCSI hdds..

7200 SATA Raid 0 is a cheap alternative to SCSI or Raptors... SCSI is good but seriously overkill and scsi dies really fast.... every month must sent my office scsi for repair... Anyway, Raid 0 works especially when you are doing transcoding, you can see the difference especially when your CPU cache reaches its limit...

for photo editing, any old pIII computer can do.... for print, in magazine or small stuff, hardware isn't really an issue.

All OS will hang. Linux is by far the most stable but unfortunate, not very friendly for most.

go for a HP XW6000 workstation if want a reliable system and if u can afford.... by far the most reliable for most jobs.

not true for heavy DI...16bit 16Mpixel-plus images with like 20 over layers are killers...

    THE best for photoediting

dual Xeon 5160 on a 5000P based motherboard
8GB FB ECC DDR2 RAM (only an estimate since who knows how much CS3 can take...since Vista supports up to 128GB )
72GB 10K RPM Raptor (for OS and programs)
2x iRAM with 4GB each, spanned to provide 8GB of space for primary scratch
2x 72GB 10K RPM Raptors in RAID 0 (for secondary scratch)
3x 500GB 7200 RPM HDD in RAID 5 (for storage)

graphics, any reasonable card that has dual dual-link DVI will do...no need high end...unless CS3 introduces graphics processor integration...then quad SLI might be good...
