Default National Lion Dance Competition

Was at Taka this evening for the semi finals... great show! But I left after the 4th performance. Here are some shots I took. Lighting was not ideal, so expect some noise. I;ll upload more photos after I go through them. Cheers!

Lighting was bad and reflections were everywhere. Hard to avoid though.

Yeah... if only the event was in the daytime... but there would be fewer spectators then..

Well.. No choice, becos they cannot put in more light cos the light might cause the performer distracted.. I used to go for the competition too..

Bring a lens with f2.8, that would be your best bet.

You're right. I was using the 70-200 VR f2.8. Even then, my ISO was at 800, shooting at 1/160-1/200.

For those who want to go and shoot, the "best" spot is on the right of the stage (if you're standing at Taka lobby facing the stage). The Lions come up from the left side, and dance towards the right. So you'll get frontal oblique shots most of the time.

I was on continuous focus, at 5fps, following the head of the Lion throughout. It's also good to know a bit about the music, it helps you prepare for the big jumps and lifts.

Haha, I recall you guys now!

Yes, the video cameras looked unproportionate to the tripods! But at least they were still lower than the poles for the lion dance, so didn't block the shots...

The tripod was lower but both of their heads were so much movement ...

End up 2 of us gave up and left first. Only one left after 3 round of performance.

Come to think of it all 3 of us were using white lens. 2 Canon & 1 Nikon.

Haha, I didn't stay much longer too... left after the 4th... cos the tai-chi masters came out... the excitement dropped a little...
