Default remote control: what do i need to look out for?

sorry to ask about these accessories as i totally have no idea of what i need to know before buying it despite of ploughing thru so many such remote control. i wanted to use it mainly to do remote control of shutter release at bulb mode. dun want to use cord and wanted to use something light (for travel).

is it better to get an order of ML-13 (or ML-L3??) from the local shops (as they always do not keep stock) or would it be better off getting some of those 3rd party "all-in-one" remote controls from local online retailers?

by the way i use nikon D50 and most likely will use it for at least another 1 year before i upgrade to D200 or some newer models along the same features of more externalised buttons (less reliance on LCD menu).

Since you're upgrading wait until you upgraded then get the MC-36.

Then the solution is to get a cheap ML-L3. But when you get your D200, you'll need the MC-36 already. But the investment of $10 on the ML-L3 should have been ROI already.

Those D200 serise don't use the ML-L3 but ML-3. MC-36 is with wire.

YMMV

The remotes for D50 and D200 are different. But the ML-L3 is not too expensive, so you can get one now. You don't need to hold on to the button like the bulb mode when you use the IR remote (at least for D70 and D70s). You press once to open the shutter and another time to close the shutter, so it's quite useful.

Hi there, if you have a Pocket PC with Nero, you can use it to control the D50. I did that and it works.

Like lsisaxon said. Both cable and remote are useful. For practical reason, some people will want to use cable release for bulb mode, especially long exposure like astronomy or cityscape. I use ML-L3 to take self portraits instead of using the timer. For remote device, any third party works fine if you cannot get ML-L3. There was a MO on such remote previously.

IIRC that software doesn't come free. $16 can buy ML-L3, longer range than PocketPC InfraRed software.

hmm, for the ML-L3 wireless, can u half press it to focus like the cable remote ?
also, in bulb more on cable remote, you press and do not let go till the length of exposure u desire then letting go for the shutter to snap....

how does it work on the wireless one ? press once, then press again ?

ML-L3 can not do half press.

Yes, set Camera shutter speed to "Bulb", press ML-L3 button once to open shutter, press again to close shutter.

Get the ML-L1 for $16 for now. This also offers immediate release mode and two second delay mode. After the upgrade, get the MC-36. The good thing about the MC-36 is that it does everything that can be done on the camera. But at a higher cost.

ML-L1 ?

IIRC, immediate release mode and two second delay mode is Camera specific feature, not the InfraRed remote feature.

There was an ML-L1, the MIJ model, it should be nearly $30, don't think you can get it now, even if can don't think it will be only $16. ML-L3 is the MIC model.

The bulb mode will not appear when you switch to IR remote mode on the body. instead ---- is shown. In this mode, you press once to release and press again to close, much like a T mode instead of a B mode.

Focusing is taken from the selected AF area prior to release. There is no half-press.
