Default Difference between a Sigma DG and non DG lens?

checked the website. this is what sigma states for their DG

DG (DG Lens)
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

what does it exactly mean? how come the same lens 70-300 f4-5.6, has the same apeture but one with DG and non DG?

DG lenses are newer, this having 100% no problem with DSLRs. some non DG lens might not work DSLRs, giving Err99 errors due to incompatible chipping on the lens.

hi there, thanks for your reply. optically wise, there is no difference between a DG and non DG?

thanks!

I did a google and i came up with this : http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-...?msg_id=00Gyfj

I think one point mentioned came from the last reply at the bottom:

Quote:
As I pointed out the DG versions of many of the lenses have identical optical formulae. I suspect that the only change is in the lens coatings , the markings, and the marketing. These lenses all feature upgradable firmware so if the DG lenses ships with newer firmware then the older version can be updated.

All in all I would say that for most of the Sigma lenses there is no reason to favour the DG version over the, probably otherwise identical, non-DG version. I know some working pros (event and stock not "fine art") whose kits are based around Sigma lenses

DG is a special coating formulated for sensor (not film). as for EX, it is actually the higher end series just like tokina having its 'pro' series. i guess the coating you are talking about is on the other part.
