Default D80 & AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED Test Shots

I just did some simple test shots to do a rough evaluation of the D80 and its kit lens. I did the shots at night and the lighting condition is very poor.

Kit lens:
@ 18mm f/3.5 ISO100

@ 70mm f5/6 ISO100

@ 135mm f/5.6 ISO100

Impression: The bokeh looks reasonably pleasing.

Image is still very usable.

Thanks for the shots ! Finally, some shots like like I usually have to take, under poor lighting I also have that same figurine (subject).

Noise is already evident at IS0 200, but not too bad. ISO 400 clearly shows. I am not sure, but if I base it on these shots, it seems the D200 has better performance or is equal, and the D70s even better. But this is only speculation, of course, only way to find out is compare side by side, same controlled environment.

I think all these ISO noise issues are moot when prints are small, or under better lighting conditions. I would always try to shoot at ISO 200 and below, ISO 400 when really needed, as I always like big prints (unless it's for the web). I am still to try Noise Ninja and other software that I have installed, but still haven't tried.

One more thing: do note that the exposure time is quite long for low iso shots... ISO100 - 3s and ISO200 - 1.6s.

Bro, do take note, NR software can do only up to a certain amount at the expense of detail.

Yes, that is why I have all NR on the D200 turned off, even with long exposures (I have many 15-30 second shots). There is a test somewhere on the web or the e-book, any of the 2 NRs on the D200 really is not good for detail. But will still try these software which I got free anyway

Looks very good for the noise, but at ISO200, it seems that the noise is pretty loud already, but still bearable. Even for ISO3200 its good

Interesting.. the D70 looks cleaner than the resized D80 at ISO400 although the colour is warmer for the D80. Try WB cloudy -1 on the D70?.

I think noise is evident even in ISO 200 - 400 because the shutter speed was slow. Taking this into consideration I beleive the test was done in a demanding light condition.

Why dont you post some pictures at good light and some fast shutter speeds.

Even otherwise this is a 100% crop from a 10.2 Megapixel Camera, I would just say the noise performance is excellent even at slow shutter speeds and high ISO.

Not bad for the D80, it looks pretty pleasing.

The noise control of the D80 is good and acceptable by me from what I see in the above pics!
