Default 70-300mm IS or 70-200mm 4L?

The prices for the above 2 lenses are very close (about $50 difference, moreover the 4L one comes with hood). Any advice as to which one will be better?

Thanks.

Btw, I am referring to the 70-300mm without the DO.

what kind of photography do you do? the IS has more reach (better for static wildlife and also better for low light shooting).
but FL has better IQ, and faster aperture at the long end for more action stopping. and bokeh. but limited low light ability.

How does this compared to the DO version? The Canon EF 70 - 300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM - or are we refering to the same thing?

If you want to go for image quality, then go for 70-300mm IS.
If you need to show off, drop your lenses often and need better build, go for the 70-200mm 4L.

I'd go for the Lglass.
IS wise u can bring a tripod or monopod, unless u're the type of person who's lazy to lug around such equipment.

The DO (Diffractive Optics) with the green ring is only a shorter n more compact lens.

But how would the result be? How does it compared to "L" and non-L version?

Check out the following test:
http://forum.clubsnap.com/showthread.php?t=188171

70-300IS won hands down. It might be just a bad copy of the 70-200 f4l, but I've used a few 70-200 f4ls and they seem to give me similar results. Soft.

Results in very odd shaped bokeh. Flares easily. Costs a grand more.

personally i prefer 70-200 F4 cos it serves its purpose for me. 70-300 gives you more flexibility to compress the distance further but as it seems... when we get 300 we want 400 and so on... so its really up to you to decide according to your shooting needs.

70-200 F4 is extremely sharp imo

If budget allows then get the 70-200mm f/2.8 or the IS version.

I'm looking at the 70-200mm f/4L USM cos i've used the f/2.8 IS before and was a little put off by the weight. Tried my frind's f/4 one before.....feels a lot better and results are still very stunning.
