Default SB-600/800 iTTL questions

hello all,

Does the SB800/600 flash iTTL works when i bounce the flash?

Does it do a pre-flash 1st ?

Can the pre-flash be disabled and yet achieve TTL ?

will be using it on a D70.

thanks.

Yes, it does. Pre-flash cannot be disabled.

You cannot cancel pre-flash because that's the flash's 'metering' just before it gets the exposure readings for the camera. Unlike film days, iTTL has no film to meter off before flashing, so it has a pseudo-TTL metering method of using pre-flash.

I too late liao! All the questions have been answered liao!

To the TS, even in CLS, bounce, with or without diffuser, direct, i-TTL can still be used and pre-flashes are still in effect and cannot be disabled.

The manual is thick, but do find time to read. All the answers are witnin.

Yes, it still works with the iTTL mode even if bounce..but do note that bounce flash, the battery drains faster..

As long ur mode is in iTTL, pre-flash is always fired first..

Pre-flash cannot be disabled in iTTL mode, unless u shoot using manual mode..manual mode does not have pre-flashes..and its oso more advisable for bounce flash..

In this case, all the answers are given here in this thread. And these answers are found in the manual. My statement is a pointer towards the direction to locate the TS' answers and answers to future questions since it'll be faster to flip thru the manual to get the answers than to post here and wait for replies.

the user manual sux..not much info on bounce flash..

for flash photography, there is no 1 fixed rule..keep shooting and try out different type of bounce..if can afford, get a 2nd or 3rd SB600/800 for CLS..

There may not be too much info on bounce, but the other answers are in there.

For bounce, but do take note of the celing that you are bouncing off. CLS for sertain events may be too difficult and time consuming to set up. e.g. wedding dinners, the table shoots without assistants.

I think he meant use manual flash. Auto-mode will not preflash also and since the camera reports the ISO and aperture to the flash, I've used this mode with good results also. The most just need to do a slight compensation.

SB-800 can, SB-600 cannot. Just press the mode until you get an [A] instead of [TTL]BL.

ok....you mean westwest1's "Use manual" and not to use the manual booklet ah?
Then would a preflash be fired in AA mode? I was under the impression that the pre flash would still would fire in auto mode to adjust for exposure?
