Thread: Can compact digital be better (than DSLR) ?

    Andy Ang,

Actually, they're both PnS cameras... 1st is Fujifilm Finepix501, 2nd is Canon digital IXUS55.

    Kiwi2,

I agree with you... it's difficult to compare like that... Depends on what the buyer is looking for...

To use an analogy, Can a ferrari sit 7 people? No, but Honda Stream can... assuming you can afford just one car, would you buy a ferrari or a stream? Think about it, not so clear cut... depends on buyer, and more importantly, his needs.

My guess would be the first pic is a pns and the second, dslr. Correct?

Generally I prefer a DSLR because it works faster.

I actually got myself a PnS because I wanted something to carry around everywhere. I got pretty good shots from it in fact, but the fact that it just wasn't adaptable enough for some situations meant that under some circumstances, I had to bring my larger DSLR out anyway.

Eventually, I settled for a 350d without grip, which is really nice and small and I can take it everywhere now with a small prime. I can even bring it out to casual shoots where I want quicker response(for instance my recent "me and my tele" shoot with my friend) and bring along a different lens if need be. I work primarily with very small lenses so it's really only marginally larger than the C5050z i replaced it with.

However, I missed certain features on the PnS such as the macro mode. It really does do everything-in-one, but I find when it comes to shooting moving subjects, the DSLR is still far superior. The PnS really kicks butt for abstract work though, IMO.

    being a photography hobbyist

only the image matters to me, what tool was used to make the image does not matter.
    so lets compare images.

in certain senarios a P&S camera can be better than a DSLR,
in fact sometimes only a P&S camera can get the shot
where the DSLR is too bulky

    for example

You still have to give in to me ba.

At least I am good in identifying the brands. Was initially thinking that both can be of PnS,
however the caption is which is which, so I tot one is PnS and the other is dSLR ma.

Haha, yes I was impressed by your accurate guess of the brands. And yes, I misled you by saying "which is which". But my point is that PnS can take good photos too.

I totally agree with Ortega that "only the image matters to me, what tool was used to make the image does not matter"

    Cheers!

Dun look down on PnS users... A DSLR user's pictures may look horrible too... Depends alot on users too... But of course, quality wise, you guys know the answer right?

i have Minolta A1. rocks like mad. only prob is high noise, which was quite the reason for my purchase of the 7D. if its noise was low, i dun think i ever need a DSLR.
    -has a mechanical zoom ring
-made of G lens, bloody high quality
    -has AS
-alot alot and alot of functions

if only it has low noise........haiz. cant have the best of both worlds.

    Hi merkava74,

Did you intentionally leave the EXIF in place.

Not hard to see what was what (unless you edited it ... the EXIF I mean )

    Fuji4800 and Ixus55

    Cheers

Depend on your definition of 'Better'. As in what features are you looking out for?

Compact camera can be use for static shots ... - landscape, studio, architectural...etc

May not be fast enough for sports/actions shoot.

    1) Picture @ ISO50-200 is virtually same photo quality.

    2) It is easier to compose your photo with a compact camera (phone camera included).

    3) No fear of dust intrusion into compact cam body

    4) Compact camera are more Compact... (duh)

A1/A2 is the best compact cam in my opinion. Great lens range. Great controls.

Yes. Compact camera can be better than DSLR.

There is one thing a dSLR cannot do...(up to now anyway) ...SHOOT A MOVIE!!!!. Most P&S can shot a short movie clip and some even up to the max of the memory chip.

I have a Canon S2. yes, it is able to produce good photos, but not as vosatile as a Digital SLR. Sharpness wise also slightly inferior... especially when there is much depth of field....
