Hi everyone,
I'm interested in starting underwater photography. I wanna go slow as I don't wanna kill myself trying. But first... I have to start by learning to dive... What do I need to know about diving and do I need some kind of license? ![]() |

You need to know what you're doing when scuba diving. Or else you could have the minor inconvenience of serious injury or death.
For this reason, dive operators will not take you diving unless you show relevant certfication, i.e., that you have completed a training course with one of the certifying agencies, eg. PADI, NAUI, SSI, BSAC etc. You can take the course with a dive school generally over a few weeks or you can do it more quickly if you are at a resort with a dive school which offers the course over a few days. The basic courses usually comprise a few theory lessons, swimming pool sessions and a few open-water sessions. There are plenty of dive schools in Singapore so please use your fingers and google. You have to be able to swim and be certified by a doctor as fit-to-dive. Other than that, diving in our warm tropical waters is not a particularly strenuous activity for someone of moderate physical fitness. And once you've mastered the basics, it is generally a stress free and relaxing activity. Of course, the other major pre-requisites are $$$$$ and time. (Underwater photography requires even more $$$$$$.) Good luck and Happy diving. |

Please get certified & get your dive experiences first before you decide to take equipment down. Additional items are cumbersome & may obstruct you if you are not familiar with your own dive equipment or may even pose as a hazard. I encourage all divers to take up underwater photography provided they are comfortable in the water & can maintain neutral buoyancy.
I only teach in Malaysia now due to contractual obligations & time constraint but if you are interested to take an AWARE Coral Conservation Specialty Course, then do check my schedule on my website. There are many clubs offering BSAC courses in Singapore & I highly recommend them.

yes, PADI Open Water Course certifies you to 18m depth, and the Deep Dive Adventure which is part of your Advanced Open Water Course lets you go up to 30m.
You're only certified to 40m when you have done your Deep Diver Specialty. Not sure how its like with the other agencies.. arampan>> once you start, 30ft (10m) is never going to be enough...hehe you'll just want to go deeper, and deeper, and deeper |

Just like the bros here said, it be good to go for ur open and advance before deciding if you wana further ur course. As my wife is not a keen diver, i have stopped diving for abt 2 yrs liao and each trip out usually cost abt $300. I took it up when i was in my army days and i never regret it. GREAT PLACE to relax. I would suggest you ask ur frens who are divers to recommend a dive school. Different shops have different ways of teaching. Enjoy ur dives.... ![]() |
