used that as my primary lens when I first started out. Great lens for the price. Image quality is good wide open but then think you still have to check for lemons.

This is one heck of a lens, amazing sharpness even when wide open for indoor/night shots, lightweight, fits cheaper 67mm filters, close focussing distance when you dont have a macro lens with you, most importantly, very affordable! Downside is you dont have USM focussing speed and quietness.

Thought I saw conman
.recommended Have the KM version, useable wide open, sharp from f/4 onward. 1:4 macro magnification. Slightly heavy, the main draw back is not wide enough. Good indoor events lens.

sorry to threadstarter, tong bang your thread alittle.
how does this lens compare up to the Canon 28-135 F3.5-5.6 IS USM or Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5? actually i am looking to get a new lens next month or so. pondering over the following: Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 (as discussed above being sharp and affordable etc.) Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC (a little wider than the tamron, but only to be use on apc sized cameras) Canon 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM (wider range? compared to the other 2 above) i know this sounds like comparing apples and oranges given their different focal length, aperture and so on. but given the pricing range, i do believe all 3 are roughly around the same price? so which is the best bang for the buck? |

It's value for $$$... The only con is probably it's not wide enough for DSLR.
It's a good buy, best buy.

HOw about focusing speed? how does the tamron 28-75 compare with the sigma 17-70? or maybe a closer one, 24-70mm?

Depends on your usage la... I shoot things that happen fast and find USM useful... So 28-75 is considered slow to me... |
