Default Magnification

Hi Macro Lovers,

I don't know if this helps. I'll like to share the magnification ratios of the different setups that I have for the benefit of those hardcore macro-lovers or potential macro-lovers.

This thread is open to everyone. Please send your pics on your setup. (PS. please don't crop your pics )

I shall start with reverse mount.
#1 - Reverse mount with 50mm on coupler (F11 with flash)

working distance - approximate 15cm from subject

#2 - Reverse mount with 35mm on coupler (F11 with flash)

working distance - approximate 8cm from subject

#3 - Reverse mount with 28mm on coupler (F11 with flash)

working distance - approximate 4.5cm from subject

yes yes yes,... why are you calling me for so many times...? (sorry, just act cute)I

What is your zoom lenght for your F11 in conventional way? >150mm?

Can just ignore the 2nd post or swap with the third post? ;-)

btw, in your last two pictures, what do you mean by "50mm with Achromatic Lens" and "50mm with Life-size attachment"

Thanks.

Oops ... sorry, I forgot to mention that the minimum focusing distance for my 50mm (Canon FD-mount MF prime lens) is 50cm

All measurements are taken in based on the minimum focusing distance of the lens.

Sorry... I don't understand want you mean by swapping.

50mm is the same prime lens as mentioned above. Achromatic Lens and Life-size attachment are something like those of Close up filters. You need to screw them onto the filter thread to work.

Hope it helps.

hmmm ... I used a manual lens where I can change the aperture to F11.

Or do you mean F11 to be something else?

Extension Tubes

Using the same 50mm prime lens and of course, the longer the focal length, the bigger the magnification.

#1 - 50mm with 10mm extension tubes

working distance - approximate 20cm from subject

#2 - 50mm with 20mm extension tubes

working distance - approximate 16cm from subject

#3 - 50mm with 30mm extension tubes

working distance - approximate 12cm from subject

#4 - 50mm with 45mm extension tubes

working distance - approximate 8cm from subject

#5 - 50mm with 55mm extension tubes

working distance - approximate 5cm from subject

The extension tubes I'm holding can start from 5mm to 55mm.

Pardon me for the OOF. Will retake them soon.

This is informative and I am curious on how the various lenses+extension tube or macro lenses pix look like directly from the camera ( without crop n sharpness).
Hope more macros photographers will contribute and share on this thread ...

Bro, for nos 4 & 5, can u have a sharper image.. so that we can know the biggest magnification with a sharp image of this extension tube.

Thx for sharing

Thanks bro. In fact, I was think of adding a subject so that we can understand the DOF with such setups and magnification even if it was set at f.11. It can helps the rest to understand more on the other setups. As for those who are new to macro can decide which kind of setup they prefer. Of course, IMO, a proper macro lenses are the best.

My apologies for the OOF cos I'm doing it handheld again. too lazy to tripod it. so I have to do double job.

Hope the rest would share their setup here.

hi Outlook & bro tltan,

usually when I obtain a certain setup for macro, I would shoot it on a ruler to understand the magnification. In fact, I don't know about how to calculate the ratio of the magnification. (Don't know if any can help on this?)

I'm glad that it can really helps more to understand more on other means of macro setups.

Oops ... did I mislead you guys?

Anyway, I'm using a EOS 10D with the setups. Most shots are shot with aperture f.11 and external flash.

Through my understanding, the closer you get to the subject (in terms of macro), the thinner the DOF even if you are using the same f.stop. - Can someone verify this?

Why do limit yourself to aperture f11 ? You can try f16 to f22 to give more DOF.

I think f11 should be enough for a test for both magnification and DOF. Anyway, my 50mm can give me the max of f16 only.

Thanks for the reminder, though.
