Default Themed night shoot

Hi guys,

(to mod) Pardon me if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I'm not quite sure.

I'm really excited that there's a night photography forum now and as an organiser, I've always wanted to hold night shoots, but was unable to due to lack of resources and response.

Currently, I'm starting a series of gothic/ horror & macabre shoots and I'm looking for photographers who are interested in joining such shoots and may be able to provide their own lighting. I'm not a guru when it comes to the technical details in photography but my passion is in providing the models and the experience of an exceptional shoot. I will appreciate any feedbacks and help and do keep the comments coming!

Hi Lydia,

After reading through and reviewing your post and doing some deep consideration, I personally think that this thread is good to stay in this subforum.

Night Photography is not solely about taking Night Scenery but also about the use of Flashlight/Speedlight or other forms of artificial lightings to achieve the different special effects on subjects taken outdoors between twilight and dusk hours.

Hopefully you can get more feedbacks, helps and suggestions and how to achieve your Themed Night Shoot session. Good luck.

Just a suggestion, maybe you can start another thread in the Workshops, Studio/Model Shoots forum and direct them to here so that it can capture more attention and get more suggestions and ideas.

Yah. Thanks for the demostration last night, it is really Good.

Night Portraits Photography is very challenging as you need to ensure that the background is not under or overexpose and also the Flashlight/Speedlight is not too harsh on the subject/model's face.

There are some interesting effects that you can achieve with your speedlight, just to share out some of my works taken some time back when I am still learning about Flashlight Photography. Maybe Lydia can consider trying out some of these effects for her shoot.

1.

2. (The Contrast and Saturation had been purposely adjusted to show the Multiple Hands effect against a dark background)

3.

Hi there,

It is using the long exposure together with Flashlight/Speedlight Repeat Mode to throw out repeated burst of light while the model walks by.
I am still learning more about it though. Feel free to discuss. Hope that helps.

Francis, what settings were used for the walking shot?
Had tried many many times without success.

Hi,

Is it the same for the "Kali, Goddess of Destruction" photo? (The many-armed lady ) That pic's kinda awesome.

Hi redstone,

Sorry for the late reply. Just got home.
My setting is as follows :
ISO : 200
Aperture : f8
Shutter Speed : 3secs
Focal Length : 35mm
WB : Direct Sunlight
Mounted on Tripod

Scenerio description : As you can see from the picture, the flash is actually coming in from the side (LHS of the frame). My instructor was actually at the Left side with a SB800 held up and set to Repeat flash mode. Not too sure of the setting on the flash, but based on the looks and calculation, it could be either 2Hz or 3Hz with 6 repeating flashes per frame. So as we press the shutter release, he activate the flash and the model just walk while the repeat flash fires.

Hope that answers your question.

Hey ah.zeep,

Yap, the concept is the same. Only that the model only need to stand still and move her hands. But hopefully that the movement of the model's hand is not too great, if not her face will be very blur due to subject movement.

One thing that is also different is that I am using the Speedlight mount on my cam for that shot, the other one with the model walking is having my instructor to hand held the speedlight while he triggers it.

Just to share out one more of my works taken back then during my Flashlight course. Maybe Lydia can consider trying out some of these effects for her themed night shoot.

Still learning and working hard on my composition.
Shots are taken even before I took my Basic Photography course.

Anyway, thanks for your comments. Will work hard on it.
