Hi Francis,

It is really depends on the theme of the outing and the timing (ending time).

Of course, if it is ending around 9pm+, I am fine with it during any weekedays or weekends but if till very late. Friday or Saturday night would be more suitable as I believe most of us here are working adults?

Thanks for the efforts!

Hi sumball,

Good point there. Points noted with thanks.

I thought of starting out with some cityscape locations first and try star trails at St John Island maybe when things are more settled/matured (guess we need quite a bit of logistics here). I thought of approaching Joanne from SLCC for help as she did mentioned about organising some Night Outing trips.

Anyway, The theme and details are not really fixed yet, just thought of seeking some opinions first.

What will be your personal preferences on the day? You can select all if you want to.

If it is for night cityscape, I shall be ON anytime during weekdays since it wont take long (max 3 hours to get things wrapped up )

Joanne did mention something for night outing? I think you can give her a call. perhaps it is at Shaw Tower car park? LOL

Anyway, if the outing group is very big. I think it will be good to engage their help. Just my thought here.

Hi,

Echoing sumball's sentiments. For me, outing ending before midnight should be no problem during weekdays. Naturally Fri/Sat night can end much later, but I think for now I'll reserve Sat nights for the S.O. still

thinking most working people won't have the mood to shoot on normal weekday nights simply by thinking abt the agony of going to work the next day.

so fri night definitely the best.

I strongly agree with the majority i.e. shooting on Friday nights. Personally I go for Friday and Saturday nights. Even on public holiday eves and public holidays where the outing on the latter will end early before 11pm, depends on which location I'm at.

If public holiday falls on Sunday, Monday is a PH too. So I'll have a super long weekend night photography i.e. Friday, Saturday and Sunday 3 days straight. For this case I need to pre-plan on the selected locations and the routes I'll be taking. Yes a lot of walking to do.

Just one little question. For P&S users like me, we do not have bulb mode.... so no star trails So is it possible to have a few kinds of outings?

Hi cerebrus,

No worries. I will try to cater for all. Night Photography outings isn't restricted to star trails talking only.

Very likely I will start off with Night Cityscape first. For the Star Trails outings, that may either be quite some time later or in very small groups, so no worries. You are welcome to join.

I am still in the planning stage and having some thoughts over the group size matter. Will try to post up my proposal soon. Cheerz.

Hi All,

Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm for a Night Photography Outing.
Currently, I am still in the planning stage and trying to draft out a feasible plan for all.
Really appreciate some of the points and concerns that were raised up over having too large a group for an outing especially at Night whereby it is hard to keep track those who turn up because of the No/Low Lighting condition.

The main aim for a Night Photography Outing session is more about sharing, learning, and getting to know fellow Night Photographers so as to discuss about tricks/techniques and to promote interactions among all. It is also a move to promote Night Photography because beautiful and inspiring photographs need not to be solely confined to be taken in the day. Lastly but most importantly, it is also for the participants/fellow photographers to enjoy themselves during the Outing session.

After some consideration, here is my proposal to all which may be carried out in stages.
1. Initial first few outings, organise in one small group of 6 to 8 Photographers, but more outings over the week (Two Weekday, One Weekend kind of thing).
2. If this is successful, we will expand the outing group size to 10 to 12 (or possible 15) Photographers.
3. When we get more familiar with each other or when there are more regulars for the Night Outing, we will split into a few group outings ourselves.
4. I thought of organising one Big Group outing at least once a year with the help of SLCC or others and try to coordinate with them. (This may be a wild thought but I think it is possible at a much later stage)
5. Last but not least, I will try to organise a one group dinner or supper session (could be tied up with the Big Group outing).

One of the reasons as to why the initial stage to have lesser photographers is that if there are more than 20 persons, it will be difficult for the organiser (may not solely be me) to control them and also satisfy everyone during the outing. As I mentioned before, the main aim for the outing is for everyone to enjoy themselves, which should be the primary objective.

In order to cater for more people to join in the Night outing and to promote night photography, we can have more outings in smaller group of people or more people but separate them into group that will be lead by a group leader who works together with the organiser. These leaders must be self-discipline and go according to the schedule to make the outing successful and enjoyable.

Ad-hoc outings organised by others are also welcome and will be a good idea too to promote Night Photography, but organisers must know how to conduct themselves and try to ensure the outings to be carried out properly and smoothly. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.

Hope to update you all on the Night Outing progress soon. Cheerz.

Hi Francis,

Regarding cerebus's PNS camera, I have a suggestion on night outings for PNS cam users and/or for film SLR & dSLR users as well. It's sort of like a workshop-cum-assignment outing where there's a theme and each participant is free to go around to shoot. At the end of the 2-3hrs session e.g., either we gather back at a meeting point e.g. at a 24-hr Kopitiam to view everyone's pics (except for the film users) via laptop, OR we'll meet at another time and place (probably in a week's time) to do a Photo-Clinic session or slide-show session of the participants' work.

As for the night outing theme, I have one in mind - Street Photography.

Street photography or reportage-type imaging is exciting and it doesn't have to be done during the day time. Lights reflect off wet streets, and dramatic compositions are possible with the simplest of subjects i.e. night workers, to show the night life of Singapore, people activities in the street, etc.

The aim of this assignment is to be aware of all that is going on around you, especially in the night, and to be prepared to record the image instantly when it is ready in front of you. Which means it trains the photographer's spontaneity and strong observation.

This way everyone has fun and enjoy shooting and getting to know each other regardless of equipments.

What do you thnk of this suggestion?

Hi Martin,

I think that your suggestion for the workshop-cum-assignment outing is very good but I got just one concern which is the Photo Clinic and Review session, I think we may need to work out further details on that.

I will voice out my thoughts over this for discussion.

If we are to gather back at a pre-arranged meeting point e.g. at a 24-hr Kopitiam for review. It may be inconvenient for some who may wish to fall out straight after the shoot. For those who do not drive, they may not have a place to put their laptop and to carry a laptop around when shooting will also be quite tiresome because of the weight.

If only one person is bringing the laptop for the after-shoot review, the next issue will be finding a power source for the laptop as the battery power for the laptop may not be sufficient for a big group (of 8 or more) to review their photos.

As for the other suggestion to meet at another time and place to do a Photo-Clinic session, I think fixing a date to meet up should not be much of an issue but the problem is where to conduct the Photo-Clinic session.

I think that the overall idea to have a workshop-cum-assignment outing is very good and the Photo-Clinic and review session will be a good way to share and learn more about Night Photography.

I thought of another way to conduct the Photo-Clinic and review session is to let those who join the Outing to select and post their best works/photos in the Night Photography forum so that we can review them and discuss about it.

I will very much like to hear the views of others over this. Cheerz.

Hi Franics,

Thanks for yr feedback on my suggestion. Well practically the latter review session is much more practical and allows participants to have time, say a week's time to "edit" and consolidate their best work. Thereafter we can arrange for a 2-hr informal meet-up session on a weekend where everyone can make it. If each participant owns a laptop, they can bring along rather than relying on just one's laptop. On the other hand they can share with those, including myself who do not own a laptop. Just burn their digital images on a CD will do.

At this point, each participant has to assign their images to sRGB color profile. As we all know that individual laptop screen colors are different no matter how much one calibrate it. So for more consistent viewing, sRGB is the "safe" mode. If there's a better way, please do suggest.

In order to have sufficient time to view everyone's best work, we get each participant to pick their own best 3-5 fotos and present with a synopsis on why-&-how they approach their subjects in each foto they took. The main objective of the presentation is to train the participants to think, compose and make image, and to express their artistic views thru night photography.

The concern on where to hold the review session is quite an issue here. I'll check with the administrator at PSS if they allow us to use their exhibition gallery. They have a projector and white screen for slide show presentation. In this case one laptop will do. OR you can check with SLCC if they allow us to use their place.

Another alternate way for the review session is to get each participant to print their best 3-5 works on 8R/S8R size prints. Meeting location can be held at places like Botanic Garden, Fort Canning Park, air-conditioned food court. Presentation is essential.

Yr idea on using this subforum for all participants to post their best work is a good one too. Let's hear from the others on their views and suggestions.
