Where to get these? Is it useful / accurate? How can i get the correct exposure?

Don't waste money..... just shoot more and you'll get it. Its not that diffcult.

use your camera meter if there is one...

actually remote and cable got its own good and bad..
for remote u can stand further away from camera eg. 5m for the D70s/D50 ML-L3, also can use to take self portrait.
but for the cable u can do half press and focus, however u are limited to the length of the wire, abt 1m+

You can focus lock before shooting right? That is what I normally do with my P&S if I am using self timer.
