if you never put your name in that spot, it would be very prominent that this is a picture with bad exposure...

I think having a picture with ultra bright highlight is ok, but one with losing all the details is kinda bad... especially for this case with a big white patch and a faint black line running down beside the granny's pointed part of her blouse.

Actually, in such situation, I'll rather have a well exposed feets than well exposed background. The details in the background is not important at all, right? Its just tiles.... The highlght seems to outline granny's flowery pants/skirt which works well for me.

Some times, its not just about technically good photo.

I agree with you, but it doesn't works very well in this case ^_^

Especially when the inricate designs of the tiles totally disappear all together and forming a very big patch of negative space. Yes, a big patch of white space standing out more than the rest of the subjects in the frame. Our eyes will always naturally draws to the brightest objects and in this case, it draws us to nothing but a patch of negative space that is overly exposed ^_^

To have the highlights framing the granny's feet does not requires taking out all the details. As you could see the background is already blur, and this blur details of the tiles will still work well in framing the granny if it is carefully exposed

dun agree at all, because I dun care about the tiles, no matter how intricate the designs are. As a wedding shooter, the subject must be well exposed. Not the background.

In such backlight situation, unless you flash the subject(Urgh!), most of the time the back gound will be burnt.

It seems you are missing the point here. I don't care about the tiles either! But as for this case when the 90% of the image is pretty dim, the extremely over exposed highlights just don't cut it. Not only It shouts out so loud to a viewer away from the main subjects, even if the subjects are dead sharp focused, but also it draws the attention to nothing but a big white patch of negative space. Under exposed it a little and you will have a nice boken, which is not going to steal the show away from the main subjects, not even close

The white patch does draw my attention away from the subject, towards the negative space.

wow... so mny comments..
heee..

thanks for taking the time to drop the comments here..

well.. as to whether the pic works or not.. its really subjective..
I quite like it though..

for the over exposed area.. .. agree about the over exposed part.. but not much choice about it... this is not a posed shot.. the over exposed area came from the doorway.. and it looks like that as it is.. so the pic will v likely b over exposed..
If I were to underexposed it .. my subjects will be v v v dark..
I guess i can close the door or do some repositioning, but thats not wat I wan (to control the environment in the wedding) .. so I shot it as it is..

as for the tiles .. ..good eye there.. hee..
I did some cloning there to remove some unwanted things. forgive me for the poor ps skills..

I think the composition is great...
and i tried to place my thumb over your signature on the 'bright spot' and YES..the white patch became a big distraction..

but i like it more than i hate it....

hi .. i would not say that this image is impt...
but its an image that I felt for when they were waiting for
the ceremony to take place.. .instead of showing 2 pple
waiting in the living room, I took the pic with a different perspective
and let the viewers read more into the pic..
I already have alot of pics of the bride and the grandma, no point shooting more... there are times when we need to look at things from another angle..

agree that it may not be a good picture technically.. but i try not to be too technical about it..
as long as i feel for the pic..
as to whether it works or not, its really up to individual.
