    Default Gray vs non-Gray lens

Hi, i know this sounds like a silly qn.... but is there a compromise in lens quality when buying gray set lenses (eg: fr TCW) vs buying from local retailers?

I don't think so. However, warranty and future servicing will be an issue

Nope. Only problem is that you are not covered under the warranty. If the price difference is very great, then it may be worth it. But if the price difference is only a lil and you get a defective piece, then good luck to the repair cost (which may end up more than the savings you made initially)

I believe TCW offers its own 1 year warranty for its gray stuff. If you bring it in under their warranty, they will probably ask their own technicians to repair any faults first, and if they can't do it then they will probably send it back to the agent at their cost.

a normal lens will not show sign of defect within warranty period. if you inspect properly before purchase, and take good care of it within the 1st year, then a gray set is worth getting. if you are the boh chap type about your lens, don't put it in drybox or neglect it easily, better get it with warranty.

grey lens are just like parallel imported cars, i guess...

cheaper...but no "distributor warranty, just shop warranty"
quality wise, i dont think there is a difference at all...
Still come out of the same production line, just different importer.

i believe the warranty only covers manufacturing faults

so even if you buy a non grey set and boh chap, never look after it also LPPL
    not covered

There are no differences in quality between gray and non-gray lenses. The differences are prices, warranty and packaging. Sorry for the OT: Do you know that the non-gray Kodak films that are available in Singapore are considered gray in the US? While I was studying photography there, I came across "For Asian Sale Only" Kodak film several times when I purchase gray film from places likes B&H and Adorama.

Yes, and a non-gray lens here is gray elsewhere.
So in actual fact, EVERY lens is gray.

If worry so much, then why not just stick to non-Gray ones? Save the hassle right?
