If you want your camera to last a long time, you should invest in a good dry box. Buying silica gel might not be cost effective in the long run.

Default nikon dry box

bought it cheap at $20 with my SLR purchase...It has this dry box silica gel material that can be emptied to be re-dehydrated for use again...and again...and again...

my 2.3 cents...

Silica Gel can be reused when it has turned white -you have to bake till it Turn Blue and Dry again before reuse..

Much depends on how often you open the container .

and It takes quite long for the humidity to drop in the container get a cheap hydrometer so you will have an idea how things are going inside the containers.

Carrefour Sale Dehumidifier Cabinet at 99$
worth investment?

Yes, that is a good investment. The plastic containers will not help you much. At $99, it cost only 1/10 of the camera, but it is an important $99 in the long run.

There are expensive electric dry cabinets at $300-400. But you could get that later. For now, the Carrefour should suffice.

I have tried baking the silica gel ... not lasting than the newly bought one. A better investment will be a new cabinet if you are going to use and store the cam often.

CP sell one 2-tier cabinet at less than $150. think brand is Akuira or something alike. Only problem is that it is not magnetic (ie. the door is not magnetic to stick to the cabinet) ... hence air tight is subjected to the locking ... go for one with the magnetic door ...

Bake should be putting it into the oven.
If you buy the dry cabinet .. you need not buy any silica ... the cabinet has a electrical drier that will be turn on when the humility is high ... this save you lots of $$ in long run and more convenient (no need to bake and can remove the camera anytime without worry of the silica gel turning colour)

The cabinet should be a least 1/2 - 0.6 m high.

Bought a dry cabinet frrom Carrefour at $105. I feel it's a must to keep your camera healthy.

In the cabinet now is my digicam, a slr, pair of binoculars, filters and loads of diskettes ...

good stuff all round!!

Again, there are electric dehumidifier cabinets that cost $300, and then there are cheap ones that cost less than $100. But either one will always be better than a box with silica gel. Here in Spore, the average humidity is relatively high. Silica gel and box may not work so well.

For peace of mind, the electric boxes should be a long term investment. So $100 is very little compared to the cost needed and the irreparable damage caused by fungus on filters, lens, and cameras.
