Default how to create a home base server where i can pull files from ??

    alright
this is probably for the geeks/networking/IT people out there.
I am looking for some information to help out a studio here.

    The deal is this.
The person has an apple system. He would like to leave his hdd/system running so that he can pull files from it anyway outside of the studio. Software would probably be FTP right?

I did this on a PC before but i rememebered that there were limited free softwares that allowed for this.
In any case, could te mac peeps point me to the right information?
Let me know what are the reasonably good softwares for this mac system (both free and licensed)

    many thanks!

Why not buy some simple NAS box and stick a harddisk in?

You can use it for archiving or backup plus most of them have built-in SMB/ FTP server functions that you setup with a wizard (basically idiot-proof).
He's gotta get a DynDNS hostname (for non-static connection) as well as a router that supports DynDNS updating too. These 2 he needs, regardless of whether he wants to try hosting off the Mac or a NAS.

I'm currently using a V-gear landisk.. My dad bought the case for less than $150... Quite affordable, I must say..

yes i think use a dedicated network accessed storage better la...better than turn on whole computer. ur router must support auto login to a DDNS service. (dun worry DDNS got free ones)

config ur NAS not to use DHCP...then set a static IP for ur NAS. then config those ftp settings.

remember to set port forwarding 21 for ur NAS IP

then u can access from outside, ur own ftp server!
