Default Coated vs Multi-coated, vs non coated filters

Any main quality diff between the 3? Is it worth to pay a premium to get multi-coated filters over non coated ones?

Yes, there is a differences in quality. The problem, can you tell the differences between them?

In term of light reflection and light transmit/light pass through the filter, non-coated filter, coated filter and multi-coated filter is something like this (examples, not an exact/correct number, since every manufacturer may created difference in them):
    Non-coated filter - reflection 10%, transmit 90%.
    Coated filter - reflection 2%, transmit 98%.
    Multi-Coated filter - reflection 0.5%, transmit 99.5%.

There are also 2/3 layers multi-coated filter, and there are also 7 layers multi-coated filter. Both side of glass, or only on the front of glass. Quality of glass also important. Some may have better/stronger coating than others (B+W MRC (multi resistant coating) filter is known for easier to clean than Hoya HMC (hoya multi coating) filter).

    That's make the price different.

    Regards,
    Arto.

Yes there's a huge diff in quality. Take a great lens like a 50/1.4 and use a cheap marumi non coated filter. See how bad it comes out. Then replace with a B+W MRC, and see the diff.

Abt Hoya, I wont ever buy hoya HMC/SHMC filter. It is a huuuuge pain to clean if you get it dirty. You can never get the stains off.
