my uncle's BMW 'logo' was stolen also and I saw it on my school mate's bad. I approached him and ask where he got his 'nice logo' he pretended I was invisible.

Look out for 'look-alikes'. My friend had his bicycle stolen as well and spotted a badly spray painted bike of the exact same model just 2 floors up. When previously that guy never had any bikes.

if only they implement something like here in japan ... all bicycles are registered with an address here, so if one is lost and being found again, the police will send to that address ... but that also means that my bicycle will be sent to my friend's place if it's lost and found because my bicycle was given to me yah, strange things happen here

There are a lot of thief going around like motorcycle spare parts being taken away also.

Maybe there are less police presence nowadays, I don't even see policemen patrolling on bicycles or walking nowadays except in the 1980's and early 90's. Even the neighbourhood police post at my flat has been closed.

you'll be surprised to know that sg used to have such a system in place up to the late 70s or early 80s. The police don't deliver the bicycle to your house but all bicycles have to be registered and is issued with a red number disc. I'll bet some will still remember the red disc.

Well, my friends bike got nicked from one of the bus stops along sixth ave in broad daylight. The thief must have been very very very well equipped as my friend used a heavy duty chain + lock to secure the bike to the metal frame of the bus stop.

sorry to hear about this. =( i'm cyclist as well and i never leave my bike unattended and if i feel that place isn't safe enough, i won't even consider parking it there. 3 hours downstairs at a void there where there might not be any cctvs or anything looking or heavy flow of ppls walking pass. it's definately a target.

and those that steal it are definately some ppls that stay around your area which wire cutter and acts damn fast. sorry to say that but it's true.

I also had my "Gary Fisher" MB stolen a few months ago when I parked it (locked) outside a public swimming pool for a 1.5 hours swim inside.

The bike cost me $1.5K some 11 years ago and was still in very good condition when stolen. Normally, I parked it at home together with my road bike.

I didn't make any police report as I felt that it would be useless and the chance of recovery was slim.

I think either times are bad or there are many foreign talents these days.

I suggest you go to all possible shops that sell 2nd hand bicycles or online classified, auctions...ebay...or any websites you can think of for selling bicycles or 2nd hand stuff and etc.

Well I had a friend who lost his 1k++ bicycle and got it recover after 2 months when he found a similar bicycle on sale online. All spares and accessories were so 100% same and after met up...he confirmed it is his when took for test ride and looks for frame marking but he kept cool by returning.
"he did not buy" after left...he followed the seller and along the way he called the police...the rest up for you to imagine.
    Good luck!

If there is a Lock .. Mean still can open ..
if the lock is Less then 5 mm thick . the bike can be gone in less the 45 sec. if you got to park the bike some where , Remove one of the wheels and the sit so Even if kanna cut that guy cannot ride away. Bring one more lock to lock at the spokey

So Dun park anywhere unless u got ppl to look after the bike. is still the best way. I keep my bike in my house ...

    investment:
    -heavy duty cutter : $20
available easily at most HDB hardware store

Padlock by VIRO, "hardened shackle" type.
Time taken to cut padlock, 15 seconds and 3 tries. Unless your heavy duty bike chain is thicker than most house door padlocks.. it's only 15seconds and $20 away from being stolen.

I was on a lookout for my stolen bike on ebay and Yahoo auctions for 2 months after it was stolen but no success.

I also had the same idea as what your friend did : Do not confront the seller directly but pretend to be a serious buyer first to ascertain whether it is my bike and, if it is, then get the police to do the rest after finding out the contact number and address of the seller.
