Hi all;
I had read some reviews of this lens, it seem like a pretty good budget lens for birding. Not sure if it available in Sg. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=16832786 |

Most of the birds in the following pbase page seem to have been shot with the Tamron 200-500.
http://www.pbase.com/soonpin/malaysianbirds Looks OK to me. Comparable to the Sigma 50-500 in terms of performance and price. The Bigma more popular with those doing birds on a budget but is heavier. |

Not sure if this is the lens you are mentioning... take a look at Newguy69 shots with his D50 and tamron 200-500 + 1.4TC. --> http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=207731 I saw there are tamron 200-500 at AP SLS not long ago. The price is very reasonable. |

IMHO. that lens. with TC attached, the af speed is crawling...... even sigma gets inaccurate AF. sometimes it will AF. sometimes it will not.
and problem with Sigma with TC, it needs lots of light for it to perfom optically. and when i mean perform optically, i mean sharp pics and not soft ones around the edges... i've seen pics takin using a 300-800. i mus say..good stuffs...

but anyway. dun buy the 200-500....
rather u save up for a good nikon one... AFS 80-200 stack 2X or 1.4X is good.... 70-200 2X also can... 300 f/4 + 1.7X good setup also.... all these are entry level set ups... followed by 300 f/2.8 VR +2x / 1.7x 400 f/2.8 + 2x /1.7x and the list ggoes on....

Thks for the advise, As I had alrdy own a 70-200VR + 2XTC, no doubt abt it quality but also no doubt tat it burn a very BIG lobang in my pocket. I felt that with this setup definitely not enough reach for birding. Well as for this 300/f2.8 or 400/f2.8.... no need to say liao...no $$$$ to let me burn alrdy !!! Guess for poor man like would only for the budget lense or just have to save up for many YEARS for prime lens ! |

no problem. i just feel that the 70-200 AFS VR + 2X sure perform optically better and AF better den the 200-500....
and summore that lens still got VR and still a AFS.... save up for the next biggest glass.... sure no regrets..... alternatively..take Master Chng's 200-400 VR.. i tested the 200-400 setup... wah. i tell u.... let me take photo "bao jiak" one....

Yup the 70-200VR + 2X TC is not only just good for it's speed/value/quality, but also versatality, when you don't need the 140-400, you can use the 70-200VR on it's own!!!

Stick with the 70-200mm vr and TC and learnt how to handles it correctly. It will produce the best images.
