Oh dear, fingerprints can be really bad and somewhat difficult to remove. Your camera manual will have instructions for cleaning the lenses in accordance with the manufacturers recommended methods.
The following is the method I've been using for a couple of decades of lens cleaning. 1) Blow over lens, either with blower brush bulb or canned air. 2) Breathe on front element and get a good coating of condensation, wipe gently in circular fashion using microfibre cloth. (use almost no pressure) 3) Polish using no pressure. For really filthy lenses use pure Isopropyl Alcohol, and a cotton bud (Q-tip) to remove the offending stains/muck and then follow steps 1-3. For really filthy salt encrusted filters .. soak in distilled water for a few minutes, rinse with distilled water and if necessary spray with Windex or similar first but don't let it sit on the filter for more than a few seconds. (last resort). Then follow steps 1-3. However in the case of an oily finger-print you may find pure Isopropyl alcohol won't remove it, so use a Q-tip (cotton bud) that has neat Windex window cleaner or a commercial optical cleaning material as made by Kodak etc. Apply a few drops to the Q-tip and use no pressure when rubbing in a circular manner on the lens element. Once applied remove excess with more Q-tips and then perform steps 1-3 above once the finger print has been removed.

To add on to ian's advice.
It is best to clean the lens as soon as possible... If situation permit. The strain, if made up of certain element could "eat" onto the glass if left alone for long time. |

![]() ![]() ![]() Personal opinion is not to use those so called lens cleaning lotion for those glasses! Don't! I don't believe what they said about having good cleaning results! Just a good micro stitch lintfree cloth to slow clean the lens in circular motion. Try to inspect the glass over a strong white light for other strains. Or better still, shoot a few photos and inspect for any blur spots on photos. A word of caution, be careful on the cleaning, may just worsen the problem. Good luck. Fingerprints on lens is no big deal, but must be wipe off quickly (within few days) else it will stay there forever. I don't like to use lens tissue, prefer cloth. Go to CP and ask for Rodenstock microfibre cloth. S$5 per piece in a nice pack. |
