Default AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED and AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 IF-ED

Just alittle curious aside from the 70-200VR and 80-200 w/o the VR the 2 lens has the same price according to the nikon website. Question is would one choose the 80-200 over the 70-200VR for any reason?

the two lens do not have the same price, hence i would choose the 80-200 if i'm on a tight budget. a new 80-200 costs about $1.6k.

Yeah, AF-S 80-200 is discontinued.

AF-S 70-200VR comes with 10mm more, better ergonomics for big hands like me when zooming, easier to hold, and of course it's a SWM and it comes with VR too.

No, there are 3 older versions of the AF 80-200 IIRC. Those have been discontinued, the current one is still ongoing production.

The AF-S series is now left with only 70-200VR.

I have amended and deleted all the OT post. Each MO sellers even shops have differences in pricing so no point arguing who give better pricing etc and start questioning advice etc to lead to this thread getting messy.

IMO, both these glasses gives out about the same colour quality, maybe AF speed wise the AFS 80-200 is a bit faster... if it was my money go for the VR. Both are F2.8 largest aperture but VR has advantages in low lighting where F2.8 still not enough, yes?

Hi CS,

If ever I choose the 80-200 over the 70-200VR it would be more of $ sense, as both can do the same job well, just that the 80-200 does it at a lower cost.

Having said that I bought a 2nd hand 70-200VR for my job, during my short stint operating as a Private Investigator. The 70-200 was favored as it was lighter and smaller footprint. With the camera it can be rolled onto a newspaper while sitting and waiting for the target. I can shoot hand held and in low light condition, confidently(the VR does help), and drop it into the backpack and quickly disappear from the scene. The 70-200 was fantastic and it earned back its cost in just one single assignment. Ok, I am no more in this business, too many late nights and weekend burnt, there are better ways to earn a living.

I think, it boils down to what you want not only out of the lens but also the circumstances.

Hope it helps

I'll agree with PE on the VR portion, one thing is the barrel of the 80-200, it's not very comfortable to hold unless you've very big hands (I should be considered big hands?). The curved v-line towards the mount makes it easier to hold.

Yep, although it's heavier than a 80-200, but the design makes it feel much better.

The 80-200 (courtesy of sykestang) + 1.7TC (courtesy of harlequin) definitely performs, tried it before liao. But the barrel is too flush, very hard to hold for long times even with my big palms

Definitely prefer this
