Looks like flash is used. I can see slight shadows on most of the pictures.

Here are a few shots I took during SFF, more in Ready, Lights Action.

    Hi all,

I got the good fortune to be appointed the photographer for my zone's youth GM on 29th Apr at TSC's MTA. I want to do a good job.
Here's my worrying part, I've never done that before...
So I feel I need to consult all you "lao jiao" SSA photographers on what I should look out for and any settings that I need to be aware of.
Just to let you know what I own, so you can help suggest what I should carry on that day, I own a Oly E330 with 14-45mm, 40-150mm, 11-22mm, 50mm, with FL-36 flash.
I'll appreciate all the advice I can get.
    Thanks

    Hey!

It's great tt u can help e publication to capture your youth GM. Mi not an 'old brid' but will glad to share with you some experiences I've gained while helping out.

    1. You've prob been pretty familiar with ur current cam system. My suggestion is that you do not bring more than 3 lenses for event shoot. As events happen v fast, i doubt you'd want to be caught in e situation of not knowing wad lens to use!! So my take is tt u bring e 14-45, 40-150 and MAYBE e 50 (issit a f1.8 lens?).

    2. It'll be helpful to know e flow of the whole event. All e programmes n happenings. E location of different performances. MTA is a well-lit venue. But u'll never know when they're gg to switch off e lights! Lightning is always a challenge for event photography. Make sure ur flash is always mounted. If u're comfortable with TTLL function, den stick to it.

    3. Control e settings on ur camera. (Sorry, not a oly user. So i'm nt too sure how ur cam sys works) Use P mode on e safe side. But it'll be good if you can try out different settings such as A or S. Try to bump up ur ISO to 800 for indoors if u wan a sharper pic. Look out for ur WB too. For publication, clear sharp photos usually stand e chance to be published.

    4. Apart for the basic technical issues, e most impt thing is composition. Pub loves smiling faces and joyous expressions. They are not difficult to shoot. So how to capture them? First, hunt for your subjects. Look out for members with good/smiling faces. Den wait for the opportunity. If you noticed, GD Ong will usually tell some jokes first before he speaks the more serious stuff. Get ready and fire off. 1 impt thing to note is to SHOOT MORE FRAMES. It's seldom a 1-shot-1-kill affair. Set ur cam burst rate higher.

    5. U might wan to shoot some abstract stuff (like close-up etc). But these shots almost never make it for publication. Ur event photos should tell e following:
    1. e place tt this event is happening.
    2. e mood of the event.
    3. impt shots like prize presentation, group photo, posed photo, face-cut of speakers etc
    4. behind e scenes if necessary
    5. angles tt u liked!!

Don't get too worried over it. Afterall, you'll need to enjoy e event n photography to shoot good photos!

Good luck n chant more daimoku!
    Jon

One final advice: To be attentive to your environment!

Just as Jon mentioned. Been an event photographer not just only in Gakkai event but even next time if you ever get to take your own assignment. You should look out for your lighting condition. Capturing background lighting is also important. No point shooting a photo with only ppl inside but no background. Bottom line is Ambient is the key for event photo as Jon mentioned you need to take down the mood of the event.
