Default Speedlite upgrade - need ideas/advice

Hi all,

After watching the excellent video 'The Speed of Light' I am inspired!!!

I own a SB-600 and right now see 2 options:

1) Get SB-800 and use SB-600 as slave
2) Get SU-800 + another SB600 and use both SB600 as slave.

As I'm using a D70 - which only acts as commander for off hotshoe shots I believe.

Usage: My interests are in macro (can I strap 2 SB-600 to the front of my lens? ), product photography and occasional portraiture/group shot.

Cheers,
Sean.

R1C1 with 3 x R1, that is the way to go.

Sigh... R1C1 kit.

Not really the solution I was looking at. Can't use it for portraiture and group shots.

Another thing is that the speedlites that come with the R1C1 kit uses CR123A batteries. There are no rechargables for these unless you are willing to import it from the states.
And these batteries off the shelf are not cheap either.

But then again, mounting 2 sb600 on the front of your lens is just not right . Anyone did it here before?

Are you honestly sure when you make a statement like that?

I suggest that you go and do more research on it.

SB800 and SB600 are not designed for Macro shooting.

Its designed for distance shooting,

Even with CLS, object is too small and environment might not allowed.

You should get a proper flash unit designed for Maco shooting.

Yes, I am honestly sure. It may suit you, but not me. I have done my research. I am not using R1C1 for group shots.

Sigh... you're right there. I marvel at what you were able to achieve with just the SU-800 and a single flash unit.

I have seen some macro photographers with a off shoe synch cord with the flash in front mounted on to another tripod. But yeah..having 2 of it is a bit too much.

Just considering my options. But thanks for your inputs.

Can only dream of this. Reality hits hard when I go and shoot and pics cannot make it one
20 SB-800s also no use.

So better start with small setup first. Which is also why I din buy SB800 but opted for the SB-600. No regrets but now looking at how I can play around with different intensity by having 2 speedlites to create 3D effects by using the groups setting. This one after seeing that Joe McNally video lor. That's why considering the mentioned 2 options.

Slowly lah bro. Money don't come easy. Interest is there but have to spend carefully also. Got fambly to feed.

IMHO, I prefer option 1).

For macro, you can put SB800 at your D70, and handheld SB600. Easier. If option 2), you need tripod or someone to hold SB600 (you can't move faster).

Arto.
