hi,
some queries on the CLS using the D200 and the D70 (just to move away from the D50 thread on the CLS...cause the D50 can't use as commander mode) want to do some CLS, but limited knowledge..... 1. any difference between using the D70 and D200 for CLS in terms of triggering the SB600? 2. if using only ONE sb600, is there any way to achieve 2 sources of flash light? one from the SB600 and one from the pop-up flash. is this possible ? since the pop-up flash is used to trigger the SB600, can the pop-up flash act as a flash itself and illuminate the subject, after it has triggered the SB600 ? 3. i wish to have 2 sources of flash light to illuminate the subject, one from the front and one from the back (or from the front and the side), yet only have one SB600... how to achieve it on the D200? or totally impossible? 4. if purchase the SB800, and use that SB800 as a commander, can the same SB800 be used to trigger the other flashes and at the same time itself be one of the flash to illuminate the subject? question is: is it true that the SB800 once used as commander means it play the role of triggering other flashes and thus cannot be used as a fill flash in the same set up. thanks for any help

2. 2 source of flash light? of cos yes, for d70 you will have to use the built in flash to tigger the SB600 which means there will be 2 light source. if my ans for question 1 is right, den d200 will be the same as well. 3. use d200 built in flash to tigger the sb600 which is placed behide or beside the subject. 4. you can use sb800 to tigger other flash and also as a light source. but y use sb800 as commander instead of using it as a slave / CLS setup since d70/d200 already have a built in commander mode. my noob cents. hope all are correct. using d50 tho >.< |

thanks for your reply, but when i mentioned having 2 light source, i meant 2 light source on the subject. not counting the light to trigger the wireless flash....
so is it possible to have 2 light sources from a D200 and ONE SB600 on the subject? or die die must buy one more external flash? thanks ![]()

1. Yes, there are differences. D200 in-built flash can act as a master flash, whereas D70 in-built flash can only act as a commander. The difference ? Commander flash can only trigger remote flashes, it does not contribute as a flash to the exposure - whereas master flash can. Also, D200 can control two groups of flashes, D70 only one.
2. With D200 and SB600, yes. With D70 and SB600, no. If you had D70 and SB800, then yes, but with some caveats. 3. D200 in-built as master, SB600 as remote slave. Can be TTL. 4. SB800 as master can control up to three groups and contribute as flash to the exposure. Last edited by gooseberry; 12th July 2006 at 10:13 PM. |

Yes, definitely when using D200 and SB-600, you can have two sources of light -- the SB-600 as a wireless slave in wireless TTL mode, and the D200's pop-up flash works as both a commander AND a second light source at the same time.

saw pg 164 liao, but seems that the presence of the pop-up flash is not present.
seems that the subject is illuminated only from the side (placed the SB600 on the side of subject).... how to test if the pop-up flash is firing to activate the wireless flash only or firing as a flash itself? thanks

Go to Custom Setting Menu
go to e3 : Built-in Flash Mode change it to Commander Mode. If you need the built in to fire together, then enable to Built in flash Mode to TTL (choose if you need to drop the Comp. Group A Group B is for the external flashes that you wish to use with on this mode. I suggest you try it out to see the effects. |

hi thanks for help...
managed to get the pop-up flash to fire as a source of light as well as to trigger the SB600 wireless liao..... initially the effect of the opp-up flash dun seem to be present as its presence was too subtle when set to ttl and compensation is zero.... when up the compensation to +0.7, cn really see the presence of the pop-up flash as a source of flash.... unfortunately, when used with lens that are very long, the pop-up flash will cast a shadow, so not very practical.... seems light if wanna play with CLS, got to get another external flash liao... xian... $$ fly again..... ![]()
