Hi
i just bought a 30D and upon comparing it with my old 350D shutter noise level, the 30D sounded significantly louder and if not for it's heavier body i wld have thought it felt like more vibration too. Anybody has a similar observation? thanks! |

I have both. Both are about same volume, just that the 30D shutter is more harsh and punctuated, while the 350D shutter sound is more gentle and "slower"

perhaps the 30D has inherited the 20D's loud mirror noise due to the higher frame rate. did you try setting the 30D frame rate to 3fps instead of 5fps and see if it is quieter?

We are photographers, we record images. We are not audio engineers, who record sounds! The noisiest of all is the shutter of the 20D. Yet, the 20D is agreed by many, a very good camera. Millions of beautiful pictures were taken with this camera, loud shutter or not. I took over 50K frames with the 20D, and has not encounter any situation where the loud shutter was a problem. The question here is, does the 30D delivers the pictures you were trying to take? If it does, why should you care about how loud the shutter is? If the pictures are not up to your expectation, and you can rule out operator errors, then look into the camera, and I can assure you, the bad images are not likely the result of loud shutter sound. I can understand the noise fiend, the sharpess mafia, the bokeh maniac, color gang, and the resolution freak, just to name a few of the areas photographers are fanatic about. But how the shutter sounds, this is beyond kiasu, this is absurd! |

Yes it's louder and the vibration is stronger too. But then the eos 33 that i have has an even louder and heavier slap.

maybe louder shutter = more mirror slap = more distortion? who knows..
personally, i have shot cameras with loud shutters and with quiet shutters, and if given the choice between the two, i would take one with a quiet shutter. dunno why, just a personal preference. but i certainly wouldnt choose a camera or discount a camera on the basis of how lound the shutter sound was. |

well i can think of a few reasons why i'd like it quiter:
taking a shot in a theather where that is allowed, shooting wildlife that wld frigthen subject away. i shoot in Corp events and it can be distracting to the attendees when the photographer is running around with a GPMG. But the reason i was asking is to see if it's a defect since logic wld suggest the higher end model shld be quieter. My EOS 100 & 5 were like that. if defect, then a trip to Canon before warranty over... but u are right, it's the pic that really counts for 90% of the situations we r in. face it, the shutter and mirror slap is probably the loudest thing a camera produces.
if you want a quiet sound, get a Leica. |

Maybe that's why they come with a mirror lock up function to reduce vibration

If you really feels the vibration of the mirror does induce some motion blurness to the picture, please use the mirror up function.
Otherwise, when you handheld, your hands are many times more prone to motion blurness than the mirror. |

I think the sound from 30D is just right. Too soft and it doesn't give u that feel of a good snap snap sound which by the way sound damn shiok n pro also if too soft it doesn't let u know that a pict has been taken especially in a shopping centre with some noise. Too loud and its distracting. Since the day of film, cameras have inherited the famous snap sound that if it were totally silent, u will lose the natural snapping sound of it and it is no longer fun taking picts. Try using a camera with silent sound no shutter, i guess the pros will never get used to it. I guess it is due to the inherent characteristics that through out the years, cameras have developed a shutter snap sound that can never be eliminated, of course some prefer soft to loud etc etc. but i think the 30D sounds so so right, don't u think?

Um, wait till you are in the company of SPH shooters. Mission must always pass, so it's not unusual to hear the shutters cracking away

i've had a number of situations where i'd wished that my 20D's shutter wasn't quite so loud, because it -
1) wakes the babies (happens often), 2) causes the subject to take notice and stop acting naturally (especially children), and 3) draws onlookers. other than that, it's a great camera. |
