Default When you are the backup photographer..

..you may not get the best angles all the time. Managed to get this take which turns out to be one of my favourite for a recent shoot.

CnC appreciated.

Aesthetically, it has good elements which make the composition unique...however if you just gave someone that picture, they wouldn't have any idea that it was part of a wedding...

Although I like how you were able to isolate the (bride? her relative?.. which leads to what i said earlier)... the shilouted person in the foreground draws abit of attention away as somehow viewers will try to make out what or who it is.

The highlight on the right is pretty distracting but unaviodable i guess.. maybe abit of dodging & burning to bring out her face..

Err how to tell you this ? Ok let say that it needs a lot more seasoning if this is meant to be of a marketable quality. As a "I just go and take some picture" it could may still do - note that you have picture with very little content. There is no meaning nothing in this. Even as a No2 shooter there are always angles you have to find them. 2nd shooter should complement not compete with main shooter for pictures.

I beg to differ. Sometimes, being a backup photographer allows you to capture journalistic images that the main photographer fails to capture because he needs to be near the bride and groom, as well as the obligation to capture the 'standard' shots like tea ceremony. In that perspective, YOU will get better journalistic angles than the main photographer.

In the above example, I was the secondary photographer, so I am not obliged to be in front of the ceremony to capture the standard scenes. Not that a main photographer can't do it, but it's risky for him to move around and take alternative angles and end up not capturing enough 'traditional' shots of the relatives. Also, if he fires his flash for such 'insignificant' shots, he might also risk not getting the subsequent standard shots because flash recharge lag.

Make use of each opportunity to your advantage!

Hi guys! Thanks for the great insights!

I agree with the part to take a more journalistic approach. Definitely will have to keep eyes and mind open for moments.

Perhaps this picture may not stand on it's own without the rest of the pictures which I can't post. To make the whole picture make more sense, the silhouette is of the main photographer. Wasn't able to find anything great to shoot at that moment and the room was too crammed to find any alternate angles to shoot the bride. Managed to see this brief opportunity to capture this shot.

Patryk, I've tried burning the highlighted corners, cropping and some other filters during PP. Somehow, they all make the whole picture look less apealing(at least to me). In the end decided that it's best to leave it alone unless there are better ways to deal with that area that comes along.

Appreciate all your comments guys! More comments are still welcomed.

antere,

i am guessing the pic works for you because of the expression and the way it is framed in the loop of someone's arm (main photog as you explained). is it?

You can say that. I would say the opportunity for such a shot do not come by all the time. It may/may not work for different people, therefore I've posted it up to get comments on it.
