    Default Luggage Weight

    Hi all,

I will be travelling to Australia in British Airways. The BA hotline enquiries that I asked what is the max lugguage weight to check in. They replied 20KG.

But my agency and some of my friends who have been to Australia said 27KG is the max?

Which one to believe? BA hotline or Air Agency.

And also can a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 650AW be carried to the cabin. It includes my camera and laptop and all the accessories, weighting about 9KG.

Hope to hear advises for frequent air traveller...

    Please enlighten.

    Regards

I think they meant 20kg for your checkin luggage and 7kg for hand luggage

Check online on the checked luggage weight limits.

As far as carry on luggage, as long as it fits into the overhead compartments, weight is not going to be a real issue, well not when I have travelled with my Tamrac 646.

    Yup 20kg check in
    7kg carry in.

normally allowance of 1 to 2 kg no problem.
SQ i know although 20kg, but that time i had 29kg for check in, the lady told me no problem!

it works most of the time.. ( for me )

check in, mostly i got a haversack ( like go camping.. packed..!! ) and laptop ... go thru without any problem... but they do sometime spot check those laptop ...

FYI, when I was in Aussie last month, laptops have to be taken out from the bags to go through the x-ray machines separately ...

that means they wanted to check for bombs and weapons hidden in the laptop, instead of checking ur data?

Why you scared ah? Inside got porn?

Yup, labtops must be taken out and be scanned. Dunno for what but will not on it and check for software. More like hardware scan.

Like what k3nn3th03 said ...check in a few bags (they changed the policy a couple of years ago so cannot have 1 really heavy suitcase) and be wary of your carry-in weight...if the counter person is picky, you may have to weigh your carry-in bag too (so best not to have a bulky thing peeking from behind the check-in counter? =P) if not, usually they see your carry-in bag not too big they wouldnt ask you to weigh it

I think how much more weight they allow you to check in will depend on ppl in front of you. If a lot of them carry overweight bags and the plane is full, they will start controlling the weight at 27 kg.

    I have had mixed experience,

    1. When leaving singapore and the plane is not full, going to any aussie city you should have no problem up to about 27kg for checked in bagage, carry on should not be a prob just keep it to two small bags max.

    2. When leaving australia it is up to the qantas ground staff, and this usually means when you go over 25kg they WILL start charging.

    3. Perth airport WILL weigh your carry on bags. anyone over 7kg is forced to stow them.

BTW Max weight per check in bag is 32Kg.

For laptops they just ask you to take them out to be scanned, as they affect the x-ray scanning effectiveness (all those wires and circuts) dont worry they dont ask you to turn the notebook on.

sometimes SQ do give bonus of extra weight luggage, so don't assume you can get away with it all the time. It is a bonus, just like discount for a period of time, but not allowance

    Departing from Singapore
You can normally check-in abt 23kg. Don't try to push it too much cos you may end up having to pay for excess luggage. Go early, cos they are usually more generous.

If you are a student going for overseas studies, they allow up to 30kg for check-in. YOu can get a BA student card which entitles you to check-in 30kg without any questions asked. (I hope the card still exist..cos I was a student quite awhile back)

    Departing from Aust...
If you are coming back from Perth as TvJames has mentioned, they will weigh your carry on bag. Don't put 20kg worth of stuff there.. cos it is a hassle to have to check that in.

But if you are coming back from Sydney, they don't have someone weighing your hand carry.
