Default SAFTI Tower

Nice sunny day, met a fellow CSer for lunch in NTU, then went to the roof of his buliding to shoot some IR. Unfortunatly, only this shot came out nicely focused. Was using the chepo micro tripod provided by Canon. Stupid thing kept on moving around Really need to get a good mini tripod, my Manfrotto 190 is a bit heavy to carry around on the bus.

Huh? Roof of his building? Did you really mean roof?

Well, not exactly roof. Its the roof access, you have to climb up a ladder and you are on the actuall roof. My buildings roof is flat, with all the aircon units & fume hood scrubbers.

Other then my climbing skills, any comments on the picture?

Pics looks fine to me. Looks like quite cloudy that day. Can see the shadows of the clouds on the crown of the trees.

Thanks for sharing.

processing looks wierd, the glow and shadow effects are major distractions rather than contributing to the picture.

composition is not balanced as the main subject is a tat too close to the left edge, creating a large empty space to its right.

Yeah, this was a bit difficult to post process.

Ok, Ill crop it a bit next time. This was shot thru the railings, so it was the only unobstructed view.

Thanks for the comments!

post processing -> there seems to be some halo around the tower
composition -> watch the tilted tower, and IMO, it'll be better to crop away 1/3 of the photo to the RHS so that the image is not so empty

if the picture quality doesn't allow you to process it easily why not try reshooting? pull back for a wider angle or change to portrait format.

the 190 isn't too bad to carry around, i use to lug my 055proB to school when i was in NUS, your effort will show in your pictures

btw i think the unprocessed IR colours will be more apt for this frame

Yeah, now taht everyone mentions it, it does look too empty on the right side.

I didn't notice that the towner was tilted. To me, I feel that the emptiness got it's own charm.

for me, i feel that if the pic wants to depict emptiness, the trees should more or less be more flat, and not sticking up like a mountain, while the tower stands up like a lone soldier.

just my 2¢

I was aiming for the emptiness, but most of the other people I show this to do not seem to like the emptiness that much. I just like the tower sticking out of all the vegetation. The little smoke stack spoils it though.

you need to translate your thoughts into your work more effectively.

question, why are people not seeing what you are seeing?

what you put inside a frame essentially are the tools you use to express your thoughts. objects, space, colours, tones and shades, these are all elements. the story can be told through composition, the placement and proportioning of these elements.

Thank you all for the comments! I am quite new to landscape photography, still learning how to compose.

Hello cerebrus,

There is a cheap but GOOD mini (table) tripod from Inca model AT-012.

It has telescopic legs. Tilt head. Quick release shoe. Bubble level. Very light.

Best of all it is very sturdy.

Cheers
