tan, the flash looks a bit too harsh and the focus wasnt at the eye. Try higher DOF or parallel ur lens with the subject perhaps?

Points noted. I always have this problem with spiders. My flash always over power no matter how hard I try to compensate down. Another problem is hot spot, when I used flash, I am sure there are hot spots on the spider body.

Welcome tanhb.

I sometimes have the exact same prob with lighting as i'm always using an external one with omnibounce. IMO the macro ring ones are always ideal for macro.

You may wanna tilt your flash head a bit upward and use a bounce card instead of omnibounce (if you are using one)? Or you could try using manual flash? By the way, whats your setup for the shot? ie camera, lens and flash model.

I am thinking of using off camera flash, do you know where I can get a flash bracket? Something like the Wimberley F-2 Macro bracket but can mount on my 486RC2.
http://www.tripodhead.com/products/f...o-brackets.cfm
This bracket can only mount on a Arca-Swiss style ballhead, whereas I am using the 486RC2 ballhead.

SB800 on D70, direct flash with omnibounce, lens T180 with 1.4x TC.
1/8 sec, f/20, ISO 800, Flash comp -1.7ev, iTTL.

I plan to get a remote cord so I can use off camera flash to see whether I can solve the harsh shadow cause by flash. Do you think off camera flash will also help in reducing the reflection on the subject body due to flash?

I get what u meant. I do see some pple using that bracket when taking macro, especially with very long lenses (literally).

U can try Cathay Photo, maybe they do sell.

I have the jusBounce bounce card but usually i dun use it for macro. Maybe next time i'll try it and see the results. But then, still will create shadows.
