Hi
I am using a 380EX on a EOS 30. Is there a hotshoe adapter that I can use so that the flash can be used off the camera instead of being mounted on the camera itself ? Is there such a thing, and if so where can I get it ? Advice much appreciated. Thank you. |

Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 would be the cheapest option. Available at all major camera stores in Singapore. I'm not too sure about the price but I'd wager its at around $90.
Canon also provides a system of cables and cords to enable a wired system of complicated flash but it can get rather pricey. 380EX is unfortunately not supported by the ST-E2 so going wireless is not an option. Hope that helps. |

I think the off camera shoe cord II is $100. Heard that someone bought it for $100 at cathayphoto.

In early Sep, I got an Equote from Cathay Photo (CP) selling at $93. But CP & MS Colour do not have stock at that time. Alan Photo has stock but I didn't buy from them. In the end, I posted a WTB advertisement in the local photography forums & SingNet/Yahoo Classifieds & someone sold it to me at a good price. Following some simple instructions from http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read....essage=2652871 I've managed to extend my Off-camera Shoe Cord 2. |

Hi mervin420,
Yes, it does work. But you've to really careful in your soldering as all 5 wires must be properly soldered. I've used the bogger DIN connectors instead of the newer & smaller mini-DIN connectors. N.B. Both mini-DIN & DIN connectors and mini-DIN extension cords can be easily bought at Sim Lim Tower(SLT). But you might have problem geting DIN extension cords as these have been gradually 'phased out'. Maybe you can try Chamoxa at B1 of SLT. Happy shooting! |

I remember there's a certain limit to how far you can extend the cable to maintain ETTL, since this guy has tried 10m I guess that's about the max one can go. But lugging 10m of cable around is kinda cumbersome....and messy.....

Yeah... that's true. It definitely takes time to setup the whole thing with cables connected & mounting camera on 1 tripod & the flash on another tripod. Depending on your purpose & budget, this combination is much cheaper than buying a new set of ST-E2 & 420EX flash. If budget not a problem, 550EX and 420EX combination will be even better. |

hmmm , tony mind posting up some pics of the Off-Shoe Cord and the extention cable ?
i'm willing to try this instead of getting another Off-Shoe Cord ... I already have 2 of them !!! but my flash keeps on threatening to fall off the tripod when i tug too hard on the cable. thanks ! ![]() |

OMG! U got 2 Shoe cord! I've just scanned it using my flatbed scanner but I've got problem posting it. For those who want to see it, you can PM me & I'll try to email it to you as I got problem posting & linking it as my site on Openlens is down.. The concept is quite simple, looks nice, cheap & practical. The most difficult part is the stripping of wires, soldering the wires & testing the pins at both ends. Just want to add that Mini-DIN connectors are the type used for the keyboards. The mini-DIN keyboard extension cords are very useful as you can just connect a few short ones together. |
