1) when you point at a bright light source, you would see a streak of vertical line.. I think this is OK.

2) True as G3's viewfinder is not TTL

3) noisy or blur? indoor usually requires flash.. Even better if external flash.

2. what is different? if you add on a filter, e.g. polariser, you need to use the LCD to view the effect. This is because the G2's optical viewfinder doesn't see through the lens unlike slrs or zlrs like Fujifilm S602Z or Nikon 5700.

3. Don't use the auto mode. It could be the camera auto use a high ISO when it's dark and this casues the noise. Use Program Exposure or Aperture Priority for a start.

If you want GOOD Photo, Use at leat P mode instead of Auto. G3 ISO 50 / 100 is the best if you do not want noisy pictures. But you don't have control over ISO setting when in Auto Mode.

Not really, it allows you to have a firm grip on the camera and saves battery life

The viewfinder is only for OPTICAL zoom only...when u go to digital zoom...then u cannot see what the lcd shows. Viewfinder is indeed good cos save a lot of batteries...but the best bet is still to get another battery. I took 200+ shots with flash on my G2 though....so i think need not have to save too much on power unless u r going to shoot beyond that number of shots in one go....

Picture this...

The viewfinder sees what the viewfinder window in the front is seeing. The LCD shows what the lens is seeing. While they were designed to see the same scene as much as possible, they will still see differently.

For one, the viewfinder only shows 80+% of the total frame, while the LCD shows 90+%, close to 100%. And when u take close subjects, parallex error will be significant so what you see in the viewfinder will be different from LCD.

As others have said, any other additions u do to the lens (like add filters etc) will not be seen from the viewfinder.

For your third point, that's because indoors, in low light, the camera will use high ISO in order to give u a more balanced shot with the flash. The result is high ISO noise being all over your pictures. So the way to solve this is to go to P/Av/Tv/M modes and lock ISO at 50 or 100. Noise level will be low, but depending on the lighting conditions, the background of your picture may be dim even if u use flash.

Guys, don't fret too much about the G3 lens blocking part of the viewfinder. It's only a $1200 camera.

The $3000 Leica M6, highly regarded by some photographers also exhibits the same "flaw". Maybe Canon is trying to emulate the Leicas....

Yes and in case you want to be very sure if the remote control is really beaming anything, point it at the lens and while pressing it, look at the LCD. You will actually see the IR light blinking, though you can't see it directly.
