Hi Kevdead thank for comment.I'm using canon 350D with kit len the set up are
#1 shutter=20s aperature=8 ISO=400 cloudy condition
#2 shutter=5s aperature=8 ISO=1600 sunny day condition
#3 shutter=25s aperature=13 ISO=800 cloudy condition
#4 shutter=15s aperature=9 ISO=800 cloudy condition
#5 shutter=25s aperature=13 ISO=800 cloudy condition
not sure whether is it a correct setting just try

I ever hear PandaOng mentioning about canon kit lenses and most of them have bad hotspot problem.

I'm suffering from one too.

Hi there,

Not too sure about Canon system, but did you cover the viewfinder when shooting? It should help a bit, but Canon system generally are slower for IR.
I think PandaOng or Qazwer or Max 2.8 can help to clarify in details.

Yes the kit lens did have this problem, when I set the zoom @18mm the hotspot is more obvious. I had a few shoot @ different zoom setting finally when I set to 50mm and above it help a little bit to less out this problem.

Try aperture - this is what PandaOng told me and it helps. But of course, you may have to compansate on the exposure duration and stuffs like.

Sorry, not canon user. But ISO have to be pump so high? That would make the pic noisy isn't it?

Hi kevdead,

I guess ThreadStarter don't have a choice on that. Canon system generally need longer shutter speed for IR, but the problem with long shutter speed is that it is very prone to hot spot issue. By pumping up the ISO, he is able to reduce the shutter speed.

For noise reduction, maybe he can use other software such as Neat Image to de-noise it.

nice results overal. you should work on PP a little more though.
i shoot with 20D too. in general i would advice you not to use any apperture smaller than f/8 because above this, your pics will not get any sharper. in fact it becomes more blury and moreover you get more noise due to longer exposure (imagine, 5s at f5.6 and all of a sudden it becomes 10s at f8 - longer exposure = hotter sensor = significantly more noise)
i'm not sure about 350D but on 20D, noise level at iso800 is very low and i dont even bother de-noise if i shoot at iso400. iso1600 however, is very noisy so i've never used it.
last, turn on C.Fn2. it helps.

Hi suntao,

I agree fully with the above by TeddyLoves.

Your photo's are quite well taken for a first time IR shoot.

I have not used my 20D for IR for some time (same as the 350D for IR exposure) so I cant give any tips there.

The kit lens are not too friendly for IR.

If you want to get a bit more serious in IR but don't wan't to spend too much to get a better result, buy yourself a f/1.8 50mm lens.

This lens will not give you a hot spot. It will also reduce your exposure time greatly.

What you may find a challenge is that it is a fixed lens (50mm only, no zoom).

The best part is that it is very cheap and very good quality

I don't know how you are for spare money, and as such, buying a new lens might be a tall order.

But, it might be a good idea to ask if one of the IR folk might be able to lend you one to try on the next IR outing ?

Have fun, keep experimenting, post results, have fun.
Cheers.

Hi there,

Not too sure about your problem, hope that this link can help.

I think it will be better if you post this under FAQ and Feedback Subforum instead.

Thank Francis247. Next round I should try higher ISO, short shutter speed to reduce hot spot as for noise, as you say can use Neat Image to de-noise it.
