Thread: LZW Compression Lossless?

  1. #1

    Question LZW Compression Lossless?

Is LZW compression of TIFF format a lossless format?

If it is, are there any other effective lossless compression formats available?

    Yes. Yes, ZIP.

GIF, PNG, ZIP, RAR etc. mostly uses techniques based on LZW at point in the algorithms. LZW itself is lossless. PNG, ZIP, RAR are lossless. GIF, JPEG, MPEG are lossy.

RLE and Huffman are two other simpler techniques, and both are lossless. JPEG generally uses DCT+Huffman (its a little more complicated than this sounds).

PNG is a very good format if you just want a pic to be lossless but don't want to spend too much space on it and you don't mind losing your layers.

The format is modern and free!

FYI, viewing PNG image files on MSIE could allow hackers to run code using buffer overrun... the flaw was upgraded to critical last week.

I see if I can find the link..

What are the differences, pros and cons between TIFF and PNG?

TIFF formats do not retain the layers too right?

I dunno, but photoshop seems to have that option. Its says "including layers will increase file size" Continue?

    Weird.
