Do hope the RSM read this.
    Hi
Ya I was in tune with the above before, but the real truth
is a 400 mm on a 1.6 crop is not more than 500mm. Optically
there is no advantage. You only view the photo 'as though'
you are using 500mm. Its all marketing talk.

A D2X with on hi speed crop mode on will make a 400MM lens
look as though you are looking via an 800 mm because
the camera throws away most of the outer parts of the
    photo captured by the sensor.

If you put a 800 MM lens on any camera, you will have a much
narrower view compared to a 400MM and compared to a 50MM

Since the lens I have are all full frame lens, puttting it on a 20D
or a D2X means that the DX size sensor will only record the inner
parts of what the lens is providing. The rest of the light channelled by
the lens 'falls off' the Cmos/CCD capture device, onto inert parts of
    the camera shutter chamber.

So if you buy a canon 5D , take a photo with a 400MM then you
crop it 1.6 its size, it will be almost the same as a 20D took the
    same photo with a 400MM.

The only diff is that the 20D May resolve more detail because the pixels
on the CMOS sensor are packed more closely as compared to a full frame sensor.

Anyway, putting on a TC is bad because if you dont have a F2.8 400MM
the focus will SLOW down and you may lose your shots. I also don't
know if the viewing area is suitable for aerial photos because the Sun
may not be in your favor.

Question: Is it good to bring along that 2 step ladder so you are
above people's head and you don't have to fight/jostle for space?

    Dear all,

Just checking if anyone knows the diff between the two aerial displays schedule from 10.30am on both sat and sun mornings? Diff as in the aircraft they use are the same or would be highlighting different assault craft/jet on both days? Pls advice for those who have info Thanks!

Its gonna be a fun and exciting time at PLAB. But since the guidelines have been laid down, pls try and adhere to them. There're MPs, RPs, MSDs, SIDs all over... Dun try to outsmart them. =) Jus a piece of advise. We'll have fun there.

    Cheers!

1stly, the RPs are smarter than you think,
2ndly, they checked my lenses for focal length last year
3rdly, they may overlook your equipment and allow you to bring more than 500mm in but if they catch you using it, u're in trouble.
4thly, unless your 400mm and tc is made entirely without metallic components, i suggest you put them in your bag because you'll have to walk through a metal detector anyway.

Just my humble opinion - as guests, we should respect the host's conditions for taking photographs. Afterall, they could have prohibited photography altogether.
Since you were there last year, perhaps you could be so kind as to enlighten first timers like myself as to:
    1) Whether a 300f2.8 with 1.5TC could be used to capture flight shots of the aircraft still reasonably sized in a 1.5 crop factor dSLR frame
    2) Would the aircraft be backlit by the sun
Just wondering whether it is worth going and thanks in advance.

Sorry, I've no experience in shooting birds/aircrafts in the air.. maybe someone else can provide you some useful info.

I did my NS there, that's why I went back with my friends and camera. RP life there was seriously tough, any FDS pple around?

another way you want is to capture them while doing rehersals...

they are doing some serious rehersals everyday between 1030hrs to 1500hrs.

but u need to CAMP there if you really want to get a good shoot...

can't reveal too much... but they WILL fly pass tampines wafer fabrication park (somewhere there) during their rehersal and will land near the wafer fab. park
