    Default Wi Fi Booster

    Dear All,

I have a wireless router located at my place and i want to allow my cousin who is my next door neighbour access. I have given him my WEP key and everything works fine. However, the signal he gets is quite weak and he gets disconnected every once in awhile...

Is there anyway he can do or anything he can purchase to boost the signal?

    Do advise pls.

if yr router can change antenna to the high gain, it may improve.
there maybe some products to boost the signal like repeater for wifi.

    some links...

my friend does that too.. he placed the wireless router next to the wall that divides the 2 unit and the next door user's PC is also located at the same position of the wall next door. That's the only position the router and receiving PC can be located.

    Hi Guys,

I think i missed out a vital detail. He uses a Acer laptop with built in WiFi... It's not a PC so any additional add on would be abit hard (unless it is a USB connection).

He is still a student so no expensive solutions please...

    Thank you.

This USB adapter with a built-in 5 dBi antenna works well.

Actually, you need to boost the signal of your wi-fi router.

Can you tell us the layout between the 2 flats? How to physically locate the wi-fi access point and the booster is very important, can be night and day difference.

Pardon my ignorance but this product you mentioned is meant to be plugged in my cousin's laptop, yes? This will work even if the laptop has a built in Wi Fi adapter, yes?

    Hey DP,

Well, i would have to go sketch that out this evening but suffice to say, the signal received by the laptop is about 1 - 5.5 Mbps only...

I was thinking of plugging an USB antenna that would boost the reception range of the laptop and not of my router. Would that work?

Hrm... get a 20-30m cat5 cable, go outta ur window, in from his window. That's cheap and good solution.

i tink before you go out to buy a piece of (hopefully useful) hardware. go download a copy of NetStumbler to check out the surrounding radio channels and find out what channels are being in use.

This piece of freeware tells u the entire 13 WIFI channels and their corresponding signal strength captured by the laptop.

look for the channel with the lowest signal strength. and set the wireless router to use that "clean" channel.

re-establish the WIFI connection to the laptop and see if still experience frequent disconnections.

the free and unregulated usage of WIFI channels creates all these problem of interference. so u need to do some check in your surroundings to avoid those channels with high signal strength.

failure to observe such procedure causes your home router to constantly cross-interfere with ur neighbour's router, resulting in lowered data thruputs and frequent disconnections.

Just a long shot: Are you running a Linksys WRT54G older version (say v4 or older?)

If yes, there's a simple way to boost your signal by changing the OS on your WRT54G to an open source firmware, DD-WRT, and then increasing the default signal strength (28mW)to about 100mW (can go higher but usually not recommended due to heat, esp. in our climate). Make sure you place the router in a well ventilated area. This is a cheap solution short of using better antennae. The signal boost might just be enough to give him a reliable connection.

The other thing to do is to use another router to act as a relay to his laptop.

You can read about DD-WRT here.

There are versions of DD-WRT that can be installed on other routers as well. Read the wiki carefully though.

New versions of the venerable WRT54G require a more complicated process to use the open source firmware

    Hey Ola, Thanks.

    KahHeng,

Truth be told, i rather not do anything to my own router.

In fact, it was my cousin who asked me to help him find out if there is anything out there that helps boost the receiving ability of his laptop you see...

Yes, plugs into USB port, you can disable built-in wireless by right clicking symbol and selecting "disable".

Ok, thank you. Between the product recommanded by Ola & by yourself, which would be preferable?

thanks for all the well meaning advice so far.
