What looks like a hotspot in the first photo gives an interesting effect

Picture #2 is truely beautiful.

yes, that's a hotspot in the first one which i intentionally keep it because of the interesting effect it gives.
about the "teerex's tripod" lol ive no clue what it is. perhaps you could point me to it?

Look at his pictures, the horizon is normally a wee bit tilted. Think its some custom job by Manfrotto

ah, i start to get what it is. haha. however, the camera was not tilted, nor did the tripod. the tilted horizon is because the house is on a hill (Mt Royal, Montreal)

Reminds me of those icicles hanging down the trees ...

All those creepers add to the effect. Do not think the shot would be the same without them. Colours are nice.
