Thinking of to buy E-500 with dual lens
Was quoted $1540 from CP, & $2000+ from HN & C. is it worth to pay extra $400~$500 to get the 5 yrs Ext Warranty ? Some sales person told me that the Ext Warranty cover the lens cleaning service, some told me did not Thanks for sharing in advance. ![]() |

dSLRs are like computers these days. Would you get a computer with a 5 year warranty? Most would settle for 3 years warranty.
As for cameras, if they last for 2 years I am pretty happy. By then, it is time to change a new body. I would rather invest in lens. |

As others have said, "will you still have it in 5 years" ? within 3 years there will be a killer replacement.
If you decide though, that this will be the camera that will see you out for it's life, then yes, get the extra 4 year warranty (giving a 5 year total), but, $400 is a bit much to pay. About $250 is a reasonable price. Barter for the price of the camera, then barter for the extended warranty price. At $400 they have room to move and still be in front. By the way, if they say that the extra warranty covers both the camera body and the lens, then make shure that it is stated on the invoice. Also make shure the serial number for the body AND the lens is on the invoice. I do it this way and there has never been a problem with extended warranty claims. Cheers.

Agree to a certain point. Depending on the glass that you bought, in this case the kit lenses, I would say the extra that you are paying is not worth it because you will be reluctant to upgrade the lenses and lose the extra warranty that you have bought for them. In about a year or less, you would have started moving up to the High Grade lenses. For those, they are worth paying the extra for extended warranty. More so for the Super High Grade glass! |

Just as a principle, I never pay for extra warranty for anything. So far, no electronic stuff I bought needed extra time, ususally always breaks down before normal warranty is over, or never. Here, in Europe, Oly includes two years warranty for the camera and the lenses. And as for the lens cleaning, is that necessary? The CCD is cleaned by itself, unless you start cleaning it with some sticky solvent. Oly Sweden told me, that since they introduced SSWF they never ever had a DSLR camera in for CCD cleaning. I never asked about lens cleaning, but that should never be cleaned anyway, except maybe front and back element which you can do on your own.
As for some saying you will get a new cam anyway in two or three years time, well that has actually nothing to do with quality and warranty. If I get a new one, the reason for it better not be the camera is dead, unless I or somebody else killed it. I will have problems trusting that brand in the future otherways. Personally, even if cameras, as computers are getting better, I have a budget limit, which ususally is the case with most people. So, I definitly hope my camera will hold as long as I need it to, preferably even after that. |
