Hi, juz wanna ask how do u find the ballhead? I'm interested in the RRS ballhead BH-40 LR, not sure how good is it? what kind of plates are you using? if i were to use the tripod head for medium format and 35 mm format, do i have to use different plates?

The USD50 that u see on their website is just an estimate; a ballpark figure for administrative web purposes till they finalise the final amount.

Ordered the BH-40LR just before the weekend and the unit shipped out of the US on 230506/1600HRS(PST). If I'm lucking I hope to get it by this Sat. Otherwise, it'll be by mid-next week.

I've seen and handled someonelse's RRS ballhead and was impress with the quality and finishing. The quick release plate is quite something else altogether. What i appreciate most is the low profile of the ballhead.

my advise is, if u think this ballhead is able to suit your needs then get it while you can 'coz it goes very fast. Had to wait for quite a bit before RRS could restock their inventory.

as for the plates with regards to the lever-release, as long as you're using RRS plates or wimberly plates(available from CP) you're alright.

I'm tossing up between the 40 and the 55. Could you share why you chose the 40 over the 55?

basically, the first factor i looked at was the cost. it's about USD80 difference between the two.

next was the load factor. i don't have gear that weights up till 23kg. the 8kg limit will more than suffice for my load and for what i'm shooting it. this is also taking into consideration the load to weight ration of the ballhead.

lastly, i wanted to lighten up the weight of my tripod/ballhead rig. believe u me, if i could go into a shoot without carrying a tripod i would be more than happy to do it! the less gear to get the job done the better it is, that's my mantra. The BH-50LR is about twice the weight of the BH-40LR. dun forget freight cost.

guess at the end of the day, u have to ask yourself what u seriously need as opposed to what u want.

after conversation it came to be S$648. GST is a further S$32. Ouch! yes, it's not exactly cheap.

it doesn't come with any plates. if u want plates from RRS then u might as well look at their L-plates. otherwise, u may be better off getting wimberly plates from CP; they work just fine with the RRS' ballhead.

the locking mechanism for the LR is a pleasure to use, and so simple. just push the lever into the clamp and your gear is secured down to the ballhead, as easy as that. to release just unlatch it and it comes off. no need to turn a screw knob anymore. faster and easier.

the other feature that is well thought out is the drop notch on the body of the ballhead. most ballheads have only one while the RRS ballhead has two. this allows u to either drop into a vertical position fast or to tilt your camera forward so that u can shoot downwards without having to release your panning lock to reoriented the ballhead.

the BH-40LR is really small and light for a ballhead in its class. i've started using it on assignments and compared to my previous ballhead this is a luxury to use. the drag tension is superb; once you've set it for a particular configuration u can move your camera around till u get the composition u want and when u let go it just stays there without dropping. then u just tighten the main level and you're in business.
