    i heard 50mm f1.8 is popular nowadays..

    U've got 2 choices to go.

    1) Get the 50 f/1.8 (it had always been popular not just 'nowadays') and learn abt shooting in ambient lighting.
    2) Get a flash like the SB800 and learn about flash photography.

    Flash Photography is not a simple matter of 'put flash and fire' (its a whole new area away from general photography). If u're wondering why some ppl use flash even in super bright broad daylight, den I guess its time u start reading on flash photography.

    Else get a whole range...

    50mm f1/8
    super wide 12 - 24
    normal range of 28 -70 (else can try the 28 - 75 f2.8 from tamron, still not bad, or you can wait for their 17 - 50 f2.8 to reach)
    longer zooms of 70 - 200, cheaper would be the 70 - 300 (get the ED if your budget allows)
