Hi all, I stumbled across this US based company which does conversion of several digital cameras on a bulk basis and was pleasantly glad to have saw Tomcat's well taken photos which were from one of the company's IR enabled Sony P200. Was tempted to get this but after seeking Tomcat's advice, thought that paying US$ 100+ more would get me the Nikon D50 (IR enabled). I have attached the above link for reference. Based on UPS delivery, the charges to Singapore are as follow: 1) 1 set - US$ 139 2) 2 sets - US$ 197 (or US$ 98.50 per set) 3) 3 sets - US$ 255 (or US$ 85 per set) 4) 4 sets - US$ 309 (or US$ 77.25 per set) I was thinking of getting maybe one more fellow clubsnapper here to join me in ordering the camera from US. Any advice? Michael

I'm not looking to have my camera modded for IR. But if I intend to, I would consider the following.
I do not seem to able to view any sample pictures on their website thus it would not be able to gauge the type of results that can be got with using their filter. They claim that their 715nm filter performs similarly to the Hoya RM72 and Wratten 89B. How true? How close are the results? These are some of the questions to be answered. Alternatively you may want to look at Lifepixel, also a US Company which does modifications for certain camera to be IR capable. Their prices are more expensive than the one you posted. A few people who have ordered Lifepixel's IR filter and DIY the mod are happy with the results. If you are adventurous enough you may order their filter and mod your camera yourself. The DIY Instructions for the D50 is on their website. Or you may want to send your camera to them for the mod. I do not have any connections with Lifepixel or have any monetary gain from them. But just to let you know of an alternative company doing IR modifications. Last edited by teerex; 24th May 2006 at 02:23 PM. |

Thanks very much for your input and I think these are very valid concerns which i should look at before making the purchase. alternatively, I would also hope to see if there is anyone here who could guide in modding my existing old digicams for the same purpose eg Oly C4040.
I love IR photography but have been doing limited shots using a C2100 but was hoping for a fully IR camera for the ease and convenience. Thanks!

As far as I know, Maxmax is a very reliable company.
I thought of getting an IR enabled DSLR at one point. But later, I decided I prefered a small pocket camera for this purpose. So, I will probably try to get a Canon S70 (starts at 28 mm wide angle, and has RAW capabilities) converted. The total cost may not be too different than getting an IR enabled Nikon D50, just that the package is smaller and lighter. |
